Reading the Snow Line

The night before a crossing, look at where the snow stops on the opposite face. If it is below the height of your pass, the pass has snow on it too, whatever the forecast says.

Reading the Water

Grey water means glacier melt and a river that will be higher by afternoon. Clear water means the melt has finished for the season, and so has your window.
