Flora & Fauna
Common
Saiga tatarica
Conservation's greatest comeback story—a steppe antelope with a bizarre bulbous trunk-like nose that filters dust in summer and warms frigid air in winter. Population surged from 48,000 in 2005 to nearly 4 million today, representing 99% of the global population.
Very Rare
Panthera uncia
The ghost of the mountains, perfectly adapted to extreme cold with the thickest fur of any big cat and a tail nearly as long as its body used for balance and warmth. Kazakhstan holds an estimated 189 individuals across the Tien Shan, Altai, and Zhongar Alatau ranges.
Rare
Equus ferus przewalskii
The only surviving true wild horse—never successfully domesticated, genetically distinct from all domestic breeds—was declared extinct in the wild in 1969. Kazakhstan's Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative, winner of the 2024 Earthshot Prize, has begun a landmark reintroduction program.
Common
Equus hemionus kulan
The fastest ungulate in Central Asia—capable of speeds up to 70 km/h—the kulan went extinct in Kazakhstan in the 1930s but was successfully reintroduced. Altyn-Emel National Park now hosts the world's largest kulan population at 3,400+ animals, making large-herd sightings routine.
Rare
Ovis ammon
The world's largest wild sheep, with males carrying massive spiraling horns weighing up to 27 kg per horn and reaching 190 cm in length. Multiple subspecies inhabit Kazakhstan's mountain ranges, including the critically endangered Karatau argali in southern Kazakhstan.
Rare
Ursus arctos isabellinus
A rare, lighter-colored subspecies found only in the Western Tien Shan, with distinctive pale sandy or reddish-brown fur. Only a few hundred individuals remain, making it one of Central Asia's most regionally threatened large mammals.
Common
Phoenicopterus roseus
The world's largest flamingo nests at Korgalzhyn's Lake Tengiz in the world's northernmost colony—51°N latitude, further north than London. Up to 35,000+ individuals counted at peak season make this one of Central Asia's most spectacular wildlife events.
Common
Pelecanus crispus
One of the world's largest flying birds nests reliably at Korgalzhyn, with a wingspan reaching 350 centimeters and weight up to 15 kilograms. Near Threatened globally, Korgalzhyn's breeding colony represents a significant conservation stronghold.
Rare
Aquila nipalensis
An Endangered raptor that nests across central Kazakhstan's open steppe with a global population that has declined over 50% in three generations. Spectacular migratory concentrations occur at Chokpak Pass near Almaty each October.
Rare
Aquila chrysaetos
Both a wild raptor and the centerpiece of Kazakhstan's ancient berkutchi eagle hunting tradition—one of Central Asia's most culturally significant human-wildlife relationships. Only ~50 professional berkutchi remain, preserving a practice that shapes Kazakhstan's cultural identity.
Rare
Vanellus gregarius
Critically Endangered and breeding exclusively on Kazakhstan's open steppe—making this country the global stronghold for a species estimated at only 15,000–17,000 individuals total. Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve is the most reliable location.
Very Rare
Otocolobus manul
The world's fluffiest wild cat—with the longest, densest fur of any felid species and a perpetually grumpy expression caused by its flat face and wide-set eyes—inhabits mountain steppe and semi-desert at very low density. Sighting probability is very low, making any encounter exceptional.
