Bolivian Amazon Rainforest Expedition
An 11-day expedition from La Paz through Madidi National Park to the Moseten communities of Pilon Lajas: shoeshine guides, suspended jungle camps above Mashi Lagoon, and three nights with the people who have protected this Amazon for generations
This 11-day expedition moves through three distinct ecosystems and two indigenous communities: two days in La Paz with local shoeshine guides, Andean shamans, and living street markets; three days deep inside Madidi National Park, one of the world’s most biodiverse protected areas, sleeping in suspended tents above Mashi Lagoon; and three nights with the Moseten and T’simane peoples of Asuncion del Quiquibey inside the Pilon Lajas Biosphere Reserve, one of the Amazon’s least-visited indigenous territories. Nights are split between a boutique La Paz hotel, rustic jungle bungalows, and a candlelit community lodge with no phone or internet, deep in primary rainforest.

Booking, Dates & Group Size
How departures, pricing, and group size work on this expedition.
It runs in the dry season, May to October, the best window for the Bolivian Amazon: rivers stay navigable, wildlife concentrates along the water, and there are far fewer mosquitoes than in the wet months. There are set small-group departures, currently three in 2026 in July, August, and September, and private or custom dates can be arranged.
Departures are capped at twelve guests. The community lodges, the camp above Mashi Lagoon, and the boats all have limited capacity, and a small group keeps the footprint light in places that see very few visitors.
A deposit of $750 per person secures your place, with the balance due before departure. You can pay by whichever method suits you, whether card, bank transfer, or wire.
Yes. Alongside the scheduled departures, the whole expedition can be arranged privately for your own party on dates that suit you.
Health, Climate & What to Pack
Vaccinations, the heat, and preparing for the lowland Amazon.
Yellow fever vaccination is strongly recommended, and is required for onward travel to some countries, so carry your certificate. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the lowland Amazon portion. Confirm current advice with a travel clinic well before departure, and bring strong insect repellent.
Only briefly. The first two days are in La Paz at around 3,600 meters, so take it easy on arrival. From Day 3 the expedition drops to the warm Amazon lowlands, where altitude is no longer a factor.
Expect heat and high humidity in the lowlands. The dry-season timing keeps insect numbers down, but mosquitoes and biting flies are still present, so pack light long-sleeved layers, long trousers, and repellent. A dry bag for cameras and a refillable water bottle are worth bringing.
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory and must cover medical evacuation, given how remote Madidi and Pilon Lajas are from the nearest hospital.
Wildlife & What You Will See
Setting honest expectations across the pampas and the rainforest.
The Yacuma Pampas on Day 3 are the most reliable, with pink river dolphins, caimans, capybaras, squirrel monkeys, and a wealth of waterbirds seen at close range. The rainforest in Madidi and Pilon Lajas is denser, so mammals take patience and a good guide; you hear as much as you see, and every day is different.
Madidi holds some of the highest jaguar densities in the Amazon, but they are secretive and a sighting is rare even for researchers. Treat it as a stroke of luck rather than an expectation. Tracks, calls, and the occasional camera-trap record are the usual evidence.
Yes. There is a chance to swim near the Bolivian river dolphins in the Yacuma, which depends on the season and water levels. Sightings of them surfacing are close to certain across the pampas day.
Yes. There is piranha fishing on Day 5 in Madidi, a long-standing part of the river experience, and the catch is often part of the day’s meal.
Communities, Lodges & Conditions
Where you sleep and what the indigenous stays are like.
It ranges from a comfortable hotel in La Paz to suspended tents above Mashi Lagoon in Madidi and community lodging at Asuncion del Quiquibey in Pilon Lajas. In the forest and the community, expect simple but comfortable rooms, basic or solar electricity, and limited hot water, which is normal this deep in the Amazon.
You spend three nights with the Moseten and T’simane people of Asuncion del Quiquibey, sharing everyday life rather than a staged performance: fishing, harvesting, and time on the river. The stay is community-run, and the income stays with the people who protect this forest.
La Paz and Rurrenabaque have coverage. Madidi and Pilon Lajas are off-grid, with no signal or Wi-Fi for the days you spend there. Treat them as a genuine disconnection and let people know your schedule in advance.
It rates as moderate. Expect walks of a few hours on forest trails in heat and humidity, long boat journeys, and basic camp conditions, but nothing technical. A reasonable level of fitness and a tolerance for heat and simple comforts are enough.
