Day 2
Bishkek to Karakol — Burana Tower, North Shore Issyk-Kul, Dungan Dinner
A long and rewarding drive east, with stops spanning 1,500 years of Central Asian history. The day begins at Burana Tower — the restored minaret of the ancient Karakhanid city of Balasagyn, an 11th-century Silk Road settlement. Climb the tower for steppe views and walk among the stone balbals, ancient Turkic grave markers carved with human faces. Continue along the scenic north shore of Issyk-Kul with a lunch stop, then enter the alpine valleys of Grigoriev and Semenov gorges — two of the most celebrated landscapes in the Issyk-Kul region, with glacial rivers cutting through spruce forest beneath towering peaks. The day ends with a Dungan family dinner in Yrdyk village via Destination Karakol: eight or more home-cooked dishes, an ashlan-fu noodle cooking demonstration, and an evening of cultural exchange with one of Central Asia's most distinctive and least-known ethnic communities. Drive up to ToodoResort in Karakol Gorge.

Day 3
Trek Day 1 — Into Karakol Gorge
The three-day Ala-Kul circuit begins. A short drive from ToodoResort reaches the trailhead — already at the gorge entrance, so there is no early rush. The day's route follows Karakol Gorge upward through dense Tien Shan spruce forest and into open alpine meadow, climbing steadily toward the foot of Karakol Peak with the surrounding peaks growing closer on every side. Your certified mountain guide leads the group through terrain that transitions from forested valley floor to high-altitude pasture. Porters carry up to five kilograms per person; main luggage stays in the vehicle at ToodoResort. The day ends at a traditional yurt camp at approximately 2,500 meters, with dinner cooked by the trek cook and a campfire evening under open sky.
Your Accommodation
Alpine Yurt Camp, Karakol Gorge (~2,500m)
Traditional yurt accommodation at 2,500m in Karakol Gorge, with meals by the trek cook.

Day 4
Trek Day 2 — Ascent to Ala-Kul Lake (3,532m)
The most demanding and rewarding day of the entire trip. From the alpine camp at 2,500 meters, the trail climbs over 1,000 meters to reach Ala-Kul Lake at 3,532 meters — a turquoise glacial lake ringed by the jagged peaks of the Terskey Ala-Too. The ascent moves through high alpine terrain above the treeline, where marmots bark from rocky outcrops and the air thins noticeably. The lake is one of the most visually striking alpine landscapes in Central Asia: deep turquoise water fed by glacial melt, with sheer rock faces rising on three sides. Walk the lakeshore or kayak on the surface, conditions and ice permitting. Camp overnight at the lake — the highest overnight of the trip.

Day 5
Trek Day 3 — Ala-Kul Pass (3,860m), Altyn Arashan Hot Springs, ToodoResort
The final day of the Ala-Kul circuit and the highest point of the entire trip. From the lakeshore camp, the trail climbs to Ala-Kul Pass at 3,860 meters — a broad alpine saddle with panoramic views across a sea of 5,000-meter peaks in all directions. The descent begins immediately: 1,400 meters of elevation loss over switchbacking trail down to Altyn Arashan at 2,500 meters, where natural hot springs emerge from the valley floor. Soak in the thermal pools after three days in the mountains, then transfer by UAZ vehicle to Karakol and back up to ToodoResort. Sauna and recovery evening at the resort.

ToodoResort, Karakol Gorge
Mountain resort with sauna — the ideal recovery base after completing the Ala-Kul circuit.

Day 6
Karakol Sights, Jeti Oguz, Tamga Tash, Skazka Canyon, Ak-Tengir
A recovery day structured around layered cultural and geological experiences with no strenuous hiking. The morning opens in Karakol with a guided visit to the Dungan Mosque — a 1910 Chinese pagoda-style structure built entirely without nails — and the Russian Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral, an ornate wooden church from the Tsarist era. Drive south to Jeti Oguz, where seven massive red sandstone formations rise from green alpine meadows. Walk the grounds of the Soviet-era Jeti Oguz Sanatorium, a grand 1937 complex with original murals, where optional radon baths and massages are available for the curious. Continue to Tamga for a guided walk to the Tamga Tash Buddhist stones: 8th and 9th century Tibetan inscriptions carved in bas-relief on three riverside stones that are virtually impossible to find without a local guide. The day ends at Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon at golden hour — wind-sculpted red sandstone formations best seen in late afternoon light, with ridgeline views over Issyk-Kul. Overnight at Ak-Tengir Yurt Resort on the beachfront south shore.

Beachfront yurt camp on Issyk-Kul's south shore with private beach and outdoor fireplace.

Day 7
Eagle Hunting, Kyzyl Tuu, Konorchek Canyons, Supara Ethno-Resort
The final full day moves through some of the most distinctive cultural and geological landscapes of the trip. Begin near Bokonbaevo with a private eagle hunting demonstration: Salavat, a fourth-generation berkutchi and championship winner, demonstrates the ancient nomadic art of hunting with golden eagles, with guests holding the bird and trying traditional Kyrgyz archery alongside taigan hunting dogs. Continue to Kyzyl Tuu village, where yurt construction has been the community's livelihood for generations — a hands-on demonstration of wooden frame assembly, felt layering, and interior decoration. Lunch in Kochkor before entering Boom Gorge. Stop at the Red Bridge for a two to two-and-a-half hour hike into Konorchek Canyons — red sandstone formations carved over two million years into towering pillars, slot canyons, and wind-sculpted towers that bear no resemblance to the mountain landscapes of the previous six days. Continue south to Supara Chunkurchak Ethno-Resort in the Ala-Too foothills for a farewell dinner with wine or beer.
