Seventy per cent of everyone who visits Japan goes to Tokyo, Osaka or Nagoya. We go to the other thirty per cent. In eastern Hokkaido the sea freezes and drift ice carries seals down from the Okhotsk, and Blakiston’s fish owl, the largest owl on earth, hunts the river mouths at Rausu; fewer than two hundred remain in Japan. Twenty-four hours by ferry from Tokyo, with no airport and no alternative, the Ogasawara Islands hold species found nowhere else and humpbacks that calve offshore between February and April. Inland, in the mountain valleys of Tohoku and Shikoku, are villages with fewer than thirty residents, the satoyama farmland reverting to forest around them. Japan has nearly four million abandoned houses. We travel with the people still there.
