Country Overview
Where the plateau begins and the crowds end
China contains more of the world’s wildest country than almost anywhere on earth, and almost nobody goes there. Beyond the cities and the famous circuit lies the Tibetan Plateau, a region the size of western Europe averaging over four thousand metres, where herder families still move with their yaks and snow leopards hunt within sight of their homes. We travel in Kham and Amdo, the Tibetan east, and in Yunnan’s Three Parallel Rivers, where the Yangtze, Mekong and Salween run within a hundred kilometres of one another through gorges holding six thousand plant species, a quarter of them first described to science there. In Qinghai we stay in the homes of Tibetan herders who run their own wildlife-watching programme inside a national park, and every night booked there sends money to the family and the community fund rather than to us.
