Indonesia is seventeen thousand islands spread across five thousand kilometres, and almost everyone who comes goes to one of them. We go to the others. In the Banda Islands, an overnight ferry from Ambon, the nutmeg that once made these the most valuable islands on earth still grows under the same canopy. In southern Raja Ampat a private marine reserve leased from local communities and patrolled by their own rangers has seen fish biomass rise by nearly two and a half times in fifteen years. In the forests of West Kalimantan a clinic that accepts payment in seedlings and labour has cut deforestation around a national park by seventy per cent. These are not stories we tell about the places we visit. They are the reason we go.
