A point-to-point horseback expedition through the lower Alay Mountains, crossing two passes and descending into one of Central Asia’s largest highland basins. Four riding days cover approximately 54 kilometers across the Airy Bell pass at 2,956 meters and the Ak Tor pass at 3,557 meters, where the Trans-Alay Range and Lenin Peak (7,134m) fill the southern horizon. All three mountain nights are spent in working shepherd family yurts, and the tour opens with a guided afternoon in Osh, the 3,000-year-old cultural capital of southern Kyrgyzstan and the country’s only UNESCO World Heritage city.

After a safety briefing and luggage storage, the ride begins along the Kara Bulak stream through the valley, passing the first shepherd yurts among scattered juniper trees. A trail ascends the ridge for picnic lunch with views across the Gulcha River gorge and the Alay Mountains beyond. Descend into Tepshi camp, where shepherd families summer their livestock every year. Tepshi to Sary Oi: Riding Day 2
After breakfast, the day opens with the ascent to Airy Bell Pass at 2,956 meters: steep for the first hour, then easing near the summit where the panorama opens west across the sharp granite peaks of the Kum Bell Mountains. The descent drops nearly 1,100 meters into Cholo Kaiyng Gorge for a picnic lunch by the river with views back up to the ridge just crossed. The afternoon follows the river road to Sary Oi, a lower, warmer settlement with more shepherd families and a broader valley. Dinner and overnight with a new host family. Day 4
Sary Oi to Ak Tor Base Camp: Riding Day 3
The morning opens with the host family demonstrating the milking routine and the process of separating kumiss from fresh milk, a working tradition unchanged across these jailoos for centuries. The ride then descends to the Jyly-Suu River and turns upstream through a steep-walled gorge, with picnic lunch beside a shepherd's tent. The afternoon winds through a pine forest along the valley floor, the densest tree cover of the entire route, before arriving at Ak Tor Base Camp with the pass visible above. Dinner and overnight in a shared yurt. Riding: 14 km / 5-6 hours Meals: B / L / D

Day 5
Ak Tor Pass, Murdash Valley, and Return to Osh: Riding Day 4
After breakfast, cross the river on foot and remount for the final ascent: approximately 500 meters of vertical gain up the south-facing slope of the Asan Korgon range. At the summit (3,557 meters), the lower Alay Mountains give way entirely to one of the great viewpoints of the trek: the vast flat basin of the Alay Valley stretches south, backed by the continuous white wall of the Trans-Alay Range from east to west. Picnic lunch at the pass. The descent drops into the Murdash Valley, where shepherd yurts and grazing herds line both sides of the road, before reaching the driver for the 2-hour transfer back to Osh. Check in to Jannat Resort, the city's finest spa property. Massages, steam room, and hot tub are yours for the afternoon. We recommend booking 6-12 months in advance, especially for remote destinations like Greenland or Madagascar. This allows time for permit processing, securing the best local guides, and ensuring accommodation availability in these pristine, limited-access locations.
Each adventure includes expert local guides, unique accommodations, all transportation within the destination, most meals featuring local cuisine, and exclusive access to experiences unavailable to mass tourism. International flights and personal travel insurance are typically separate.
We design adventures for various fitness levels and always discuss physical requirements during planning. Many of our destinations offer different activity intensities, and we can customize experiences to match your capabilities while still providing authentic wilderness encounters.
We partner exclusively with local operators who share our conservation values, ensure tourism revenue supports local communities, limit group sizes to minimize environmental impact, and contribute directly to conservation projects in each destination we visit.
We understand plans can change. Our cancellation policy varies by destination and timing, but we always work to minimize fees and maximize flexibility. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance and will provide guidance on the best policies for adventure travel.
While we specialize in our core destinations, we can create custom adventures to other remote, wild places that align with our mission of authentic, sustainable travel. Contact us to discuss your dream destination and we'll explore possibilities.
We focus exclusively on authentic, off-the-beaten-path destinations that most travelers never reach. Our deep partnerships with local communities, commitment to conservation, and rejection of mass tourism create truly transformative experiences that benefit both travelers and destinations.
Safety is our top priority. Our local partners are extensively vetted and trained in wilderness safety and emergency protocols. We provide comprehensive safety briefings, maintain communication equipment, and have established emergency evacuation procedures for all our remote destinations.
