Guatemala sits at the crossroads of the Nearctic and Neotropical worlds, where 37 volcanoes rise above cloud forests sheltering the resplendent quetzal and 22 living Maya cultures maintain traditions spanning three millennia. The Maya Biosphere Reserve protects the largest tropical forest north of the Amazon, while Lake Atitlan, one of Earth's most dramatic caldera lakes, reflects three volcanic peaks above indigenous villages unchanged for centuries. With 31% of national territory under protection, a community forest concession model that has achieved near-zero deforestation for over 20 years, and archaeological wonders stretching from Tikal to the still-unexcavated pyramid complex of El Mirador, Guatemala offers the rare convergence of extraordinary biodiversity, living indigenous culture, and volcanic drama that defines the EcoVoyager experience.

January
Peak
Peak dry season with the clearest skies of the year. Antigua and the highlands enjoy warm, sunny days ideal for volcano trekking and ruins exploration. Coffee harvest is at its most intensive - January and February are peak picking months across Guatemala's 8 growing regions. The Cuchumatanes and high volcanic summits see sub-zero nights and frost above 3,500 meters. Pacific humpback whale watching is excellent off Monterrico. Sea turtle hatchling releases continue on Pacific beaches through the month.
