Why ARCAS?

ARCAS was founded under the dangerous and urgent threat of protecting animals who were being confiscated to be sold to the black market in Guatemala. In the years since then, they have grown to become one of the largest rescue centers in the world. Their purpose has grown along with them to focus on rescue, rehabilitation, research and habitat conservation.

The ARCAS Wildlife Rescue Center in Petén is one of the most respected facilities of its kind in the region. Once plentiful Scarlet Macaws, jaguars, spider monkeys, and tapirs are some of the animals ARCAS is focused on protecting in the increasingly fragile Maya Biosphere Reserve.

On Guatemala’s Pacific coast, they operate hatcheries where volunteers conduct nightly patrols of the coastline to protect nests from poaching. The Pacific Leatherback Turtle, critically endangered with an estimated 2,000 individuals remaining, and the Olive Ridley sea turtle are among the many species this facility works diligently to protect.

Not only do ARCAS’s facilities have a wide scope in conservation in Guatemala, but quality of care is at the forefront of their work. ARCAS is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries as meeting the highest standard in humane animal care. Given this incredible level of work, we at EcoVoyager are proud to be a supporting partner.

What This Means for You

Every organization in the EcoVoyager network has to meet a specific bar: deep local expertise, a genuine commitment to the places they operate in, and a mission to conservation. We created this partnership to bring awareness to ARCAS’s work and allow our adventures to join in supporting it, whether through learning about the animals and their habitat, or simply supporting the cause through a donation on your behalf.

We’re currently building out our Guatemala tour offerings with ARCAS and will be sharing specific itineraries and departure dates in the coming weeks and months. If Guatemala’s wildlife has been on your list, we’re already taking inquiries and custom tour requests. With ARCAS on the ground, we’re going to make sure our travelers help protect everything that Guatemala has to offer.
