Adventure Awaits

1
Day 1
Arrival in Antananarivo
Upon arrival at Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo, you'll be transferred to your hotel in the capital city. Take time to rest and recover from your international journey while getting oriented to this remarkable island nation. Your tour guide will provide a comprehensive briefing about the upcoming adventure, conduct equipment checks, and answer any questions about the expedition ahead. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy an optional exploration of Antananarivo's markets and cultural sites. Overnight at hotel with dinner included.
2
Day 2
Journey to Coast
After breakfast, catch your domestic flight to Maroantsetra, gateway to the Masoala Peninsula. Upon arrival, embark on a shorter 1-2 hour boat transfer to a comfortable coastal lodge positioned strategically between Maroantsetra and Masoala Village. This breaks up the long journey while getting you closer to your trekking starting point. Meet your expert porter team and local guides who will accompany you throughout the expedition. Use the afternoon for equipment checks, trek preparation, and gentle coastal exploration or nature walks around the lodge. This rest day allows for proper acclimatization and ensures you're well-prepared for the adventure ahead.
3
Day 3
Trek Begins
Complete your journey to Masoala Village with a final 2-3 hour scenic boat ride, then immediately begin your rainforest adventure! Upon arrival in Masoala Village, meet with porters, finalize preparations, and start trekking toward Ratragnavona camp. This 4-5 hour afternoon trek takes you from coastal beaches toward the west coast of the Peninsula through diverse landscapes including rice fields and coastal vegetation. Your first wildlife encounters await with colorful chameleons, endemic lizards, and various snake species. Set up camp at Ratragnavona for your first night under the rainforest canopy.
4
Day 4
Deep Forest Challenge
Today presents the most challenging and rewarding day of trekking as you venture deep into Masoala's pristine rainforest. Begin with a 2-hour morning walk through rice fields and vanilla plantations before the trail becomes steep and demanding with significant elevation changes and multiple river crossings. This is where Masoala reveals its true wilderness character - dense primary rainforest where red-ruffed lemurs call through the canopy and rare birds like Bernier's vanga and the crested ibis can be spotted. Your perseverance will be rewarded with incredible wildlife sightings including white-fronted brown lemurs and bamboo lemurs in their undisturbed habitat. Camp overnight in the heart of the forest at Antalaviana.
5
Day 5
To Tampolo Lodge
Enjoy a more relaxed day of trekking across mostly flat terrain as you make your way toward the Tampolo area. The 6-hour journey takes you along pristine shorelines and forest edges, offering a perfect blend of marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Take refreshing snorkeling breaks in crystal-clear waters and observe the incredible diversity of chameleon species and snakes that thrive in this transition zone. Spot various seabirds and enjoy the spectacular coastal scenery as you approach the Tampolo tourist area. Arrive at your comfortable lodge accommodation and celebrate the completion of the challenging trekking portion with your porter team over a well-deserved dinner.
6
Day 6
Rainforest Exploration
Use your lodge as a base for exploring the incredible primary rainforest surrounding Tampolo. Spend the morning on well-maintained trails searching for red-ruffed lemurs, bamboo lemurs, and the distinctive helmet vanga and scaly ground roller birds that make this region famous among wildlife enthusiasts. The afternoon offers relaxation time on pristine beaches followed by an exciting night walk where the forest comes alive with nocturnal species. Listen for the calls of various owl species and watch for active lemurs including mouse lemurs, greater dwarf lemurs, and if you're very lucky, the elusive Aye-Aye.
7
Day 7
Virgin Forest Expedition
Embark on an intensive 5-6 hour exploration of Lohatrozona virgin rainforest, considered the premium wildlife viewing area of Masoala. This represents some of the best remaining primary rainforest in Madagascar, home to healthy populations of red-ruffed lemurs, white-fronted brown lemurs, and ring-tailed mongoose. Reptile enthusiasts will be thrilled by encounters with Parson's chameleons and stump-tailed chameleons, while bird watchers can spot helmet vangas, various ground rollers, multiple coua species, and the impressive serpent eagle. Afternoon snorkeling sessions offer chances to see sea turtles, and between June 15-September 15, humpback whales can often be observed from the shore.
8
Day 8
Marine Parks
Discover a completely different ecosystem as you explore the unique littoral forest around Tampolo, particularly fascinating for its incredible diversity of endemic palm species including Satranala decusilvae and other rare varieties found nowhere else on Earth. The morning forest walk leads back to extensive snorkeling opportunities in the Tampolo Marine Park, where you'll encounter an underwater wonderland of colorful parrot fish, diverse coral reef formations in spectacular shapes, angel fish in brilliant colors, and excellent chances of swimming alongside sea turtles in the crystal-clear blue waters.
9
Day 9
Nosy Mangabe Island
Take a scenic 1h45min boat ride to the remarkable Nosy Mangabe National Park, a 520-hectare island sanctuary in Antongil Bay. The journey itself offers marine wildlife viewing including bottlenose dolphins and seasonal humpback whales. This island proves easier for wildlife spotting than mainland Masoala due to fewer predators, making it excellent for observing black and white ruffed lemurs, leaf-tailed geckos, tree boas, and an incredible diversity of amphibians and reptiles. Explore fascinating historical sites including the Dutch Beach trading post from the 17th century, traditional Betsimisaraka tombs, and an old lighthouse. Camp overnight on this unique island sanctuary.
10
Day 10
Departure
Return to Maroantsetra by speed boat for your final Madagascar wildlife experience - a specialized tour to see the endemic tomato frogs (Dyscophus antongilii) that exist only in the Antongil Bay area. These bright orange-red amphibians are found nowhere else on Earth and represent a perfect finale to your wildlife adventure. After this unique experience, catch your afternoon flight back to Antananarivo for international connections or extend your Madagascar journey with additional destinations.
