Booking, Dates & Group Size
How departures, pricing, and group size work on this expedition.
It runs in the dry season, May to October, when the skies are clearest, the lake is calmest in the mornings for the kayak and sail, and the islands are at their best. Nights are cold at altitude year round. Dates are set with you when you book, and the trip can also run as a private departure.
The headline rate of $2,000 per person is the best-value price at the full group of ten. The per-person cost is higher for smaller parties, since the boats, guide, and vehicle are shared across fewer people; the full scale of rates from two to ten travelers is shown on the page.
A deposit of $500 per person, twenty-five percent of the ten-guest rate, secures your place, with the balance due before departure. You can pay by whichever method suits you, whether card, bank transfer, or wire.
The expedition is capped at ten guests. The kayaks, the catamaran, and the community homestays all have limited capacity, and small numbers keep the experience personal and the impact light on the island communities.
Altitude & Health
The most important thing to prepare for, since the whole trip stays high.
The entire route stays at high altitude, from La Paz at 3,300 to 4,061 meters to Lake Titicaca at 3,812 meters, with no low-altitude relief at any point, so acclimatization matters throughout. The first afternoon in La Paz is left open to help you adjust. If you can, arrive a day or two early, and discuss the altitude with your doctor if you have any heart or respiratory condition.
Take the first day in La Paz slowly, hydrate well, eat lightly, and let the easy early pace do its work. Many travelers find coca tea helps, and you can ask your doctor about preventative altitude medication before the trip.
Lake Titicaca is very cold, so the conservation snorkel for the Titicaca water frog on Isla de la Luna is done in cold water with wetsuits provided, and it is kept short. It is a hands-on conservation activity rather than a leisure swim, and you are welcome to observe from the boat instead if you prefer.
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory and should cover high-altitude activities and medical evacuation, since some of the islands and the eastern shore are well away from the nearest hospital.
Activities & Fitness
What the active days ask of you, at altitude.
It rates as moderate in exertion, but everything happens above 3,300 meters, which makes even easy activities feel harder. The trip includes a mountain bike day, a kayak crossing, island walks on uneven paths and steps, a short snorkel, and a long catamaran sail. None of it is technical, but a reasonable level of fitness and comfort at altitude make it far more enjoyable.
No. The 25-kilometer bike day runs on gentle agricultural terrain at an easy pace, and the kayak crossing to Isla del Sol is short and fully guided. Basic comfort on a bike and in a kayak is enough.
The crossing is made in calm morning conditions with a guide and a motorized support boat alongside, and it is weather-dependent. If the lake is too rough or the port is closed for weather, the crossing is made by boat instead, with safety always taking priority over the activity.
The island visits, especially Isla del Sol, involve walking on uneven stone paths and steps at altitude, at a relaxed pace with time to rest. There are no long or strenuous hikes.
The Lake, Conditions & What to Expect
Weather, lodging, and the rhythm of the islands.
In the dry season, days are bright and mild and the high-altitude sun is intense, while nights are cold and can drop below freezing. The lake is often glassy at dawn and can turn windy by afternoon. Pack warm layers, a windproof, a hat and gloves, and strong sun protection.
It ranges from a boutique hotel in La Paz to a solar-powered lodge on Isla del Sol and community-run homestays and lodging on the islands and the eastern shore. The remote stays are simple, locally owned, and chosen for their place in the community, so expect basic facilities and limited hot water in places.
La Paz and Copacabana have coverage. The islands and the eastern-shore communities are largely off-grid, so treat those days as a genuine disconnection and let people know your schedule in advance.
Possibly. Several sites and crossings are community-managed and weather-dependent, and access can change at short notice due to local decisions or lake conditions. When that happens we adapt the route to keep the spirit of the trip intact, which is part of traveling in places run by their own communities.
