Your Georgia Tour Itinerary

1
Day 1
Arrival in Tbilisi
Arrive at Tbilisi International Airport, where your driver meets you for the transfer to your guesthouse in the city center. Check in and spend the rest of the day at your own pace. Wander the tree-lined avenues of Rustaveli, find a local bakery turning out fresh shotis puri from a traditional tone oven, or simply watch the sun set over the Old Town rooftops from your balcony.
2
Day 2
Mtskheta & Tbilisi Walking Tour
Your guide picks you up at 10:00 for a day spanning 17 centuries of Georgian civilization. Begin with a 40-minute drive to Mtskheta, Georgia’s ancient capital. Climb to the hilltop Jvari Monastery for sweeping views over the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, then descend into town to explore Svetitskhoveli Cathedral — believed to house the robe of Christ and revered as the spiritual anchor of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Light lunch in a small family-run restaurant. Return to Tbilisi for an afternoon walking tour: start at the Metekhi church and King Vakhtang monument, ride the cable car up to the ancient Narikala Fortress, then wind down through the Legvtakhevi gorge past a hidden waterfall, the side-by-side church and mosque, and the famous sulfur bathhouses before emerging in the cobblestoned Shardeni district.
3
Day 3
Kakheti Wine Country & Lagodekhi Wilderness
Depart Tbilisi early for a two-day immersion in Kakheti — Georgia’s eastern wine heartland. The road climbs through the Gombori mountain pass at 1,639 meters, where a photo stop reveals panoramic views across forested ridgelines. Descend into the Alazani Valley and visit a small family-run biodynamic winery to learn about traditional Georgian qvevri winemaking — an 8,000-year-old method of fermenting grapes in buried clay vessels — followed by a tasting. Continue to the Gremi architectural complex, where the ruins of a 16th-century citadel and the Church of the Archangels stand in the middle of the valley, remnants of a once-thriving Silk Road town. Lunch at a professional winery in Kvareli, tasting indigenous Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, and Mtsvane varieties. Drive east to Lagodekhi National Park on Georgia’s far border with Russia and Azerbaijan. Take an evening walk through the ancient forest before dinner in the yard of a local family home.
4
Day 4
Lagodekhi Hike & the City of Love
Wake to the fresh mountain air of Lagodekhi and enjoy a home-cooked breakfast before setting out on a light hike into the national park, following a trail along a small mountain river through ancient mixed forest for about 90 minutes. Drive 50 minutes to Sighnaghi — a picturesque hilltop town known as the “City of Love” for its round-the-clock marriage registration office. Perched above the Alazani Valley with the snow-capped Greater Caucasus as a backdrop, Sighnaghi is encircled by 18th-century defensive walls studded with 23 watchtowers. Explore the cobblestone lanes, browse the local galleries, and enjoy a late lunch with valley views before continuing to Saguramo for the evening.
5
Day 5
Borjomi Springs & the Fortress of Rabati
After a home-style breakfast, drive southwest toward the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. Arrive in Borjomi, a mountain spa town nestled between high forested ridges and famous worldwide for its mineral water. Walk through Borjomi Central Park to the original mineral spring source and taste the warm, naturally carbonated water straight from the ground. Continue to the village of Chitakhevi to visit the Green Monastery — the medieval St. George Church tucked deep inside a mossy mountain forest. In the afternoon, drive to Akhaltsikhe to explore the Rabati Fortress, a 9th-century citadel later expanded by the Ottomans into a complex that houses Georgian Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic, and Catholic churches side by side — a striking symbol of the religious diversity that has defined this border region for centuries.
6
Day 6
Vardzia Cave City & a Sustainable Farm Lunch
Drive deeper into the Samtskhe-Javakheti highlands to Vardzia, one of Georgia’s most extraordinary archaeological sites. This vast cave monastery was carved into a sheer cliff face in the 12th century under the patronage of Queen Tamar, at the height of Georgia’s Golden Age. Explore the honeycomb of caves that once held 2,000 rooms, a church adorned with original medieval frescoes, and an irrigation system that sustained an entire underground community. Lunch at Volodya’s Cottage — a family farm on the banks of the Mtkvari River that has grown from a small guesthouse into a leading local example of sustainable agriculture, with its own fish pond, livestock yards, kitchen garden, and a solar-powered greenhouse. Return to Borjomi for the evening.
7
Day 7
Samegrelo Wine & Martvili Canyon by Boat
Leave Borjomi and drive west past the Rikoti mountain pass into a completely different Georgia — the Samegrelo region, known for its subtropical climate, bold cuisine, and rare indigenous grape varieties. Stop at a small family winery for a tasting of limited-production wines, paired with a traditional Megrelian lunch rich with walnut sauces and sharp cheeses. Continue to Martvili Canyon, once the private bathing grounds of the Dadiani royal family. Board a boat and glide beneath towering moss-draped limestone walls through deep emerald water, passing small waterfalls and ancient geological formations. The canyon was off-limits for generations and only recently opened to visitors. Drive to Tskaltubo for the evening.
8
Day 8
Dinosaur Footprints, Black Sea Coast & Batumi
Begin the day at Sataplia Nature Reserve, where well-marked trails lead through ancient Colchic forest to a conservation building housing real dinosaur footprints — tracks left by herbivorous and raptor species from different geological epochs, preserved in the limestone. Explore the illuminated karst caves and the wild bee habitat that gives Sataplia its name (“Place of Honey”), then take in panoramic views from the glass observation platform. Drive south toward the Black Sea coast and the Adjara region. Stop in the seaside village of Shekvetili for lunch at a family-run beach café, then visit the “Georgia in Miniatures” park displaying 44 scale models of architectural monuments from across the country. Arrive in Batumi for the first of three nights on the coast.
9
Day 9
Machakhela – Georgia’s Hidden Valley
Today takes you into one of Georgia’s most extraordinary and least-visited places — the Machakhela Protected Areas, a remote valley that was completely sealed off from public access throughout the Soviet era due to its location on the Turkish border. Start at the visitors’ center to learn about conservation and community-led sustainable development in the region, then drive up into the mountains to visit one of Georgia’s oldest ethnographic museum collections. Meet a local family producing artisanal cheese and mountain honey, followed by lunch and a wine tasting at the home of a Machakhela winemaker. On the return, stop at the medieval Tskhimlari arch bridge spanning a rushing mountain river. Return to Batumi for the evening.
10
Day 10
Batumi Boulevard & Botanical Gardens on the Cape
Spend the morning exploring Batumi’s eclectic waterfront. Walk the famous Batumi Boulevard, visit Europe Square and the ornate Piazza, and see the kinetic Ali and Nino statue — two metal figures that slowly pass through each other in an endless cycle, symbolizing love between different cultures. Ride the longest cable car in Georgia from sea level to the summit of Anuria Mountain, 250 meters above the city, for sweeping views back over the coast. After lunch, visit the Batumi Botanical Garden on Mtsvane Kontskhi (Green Cape), where miles of winding paths lead through floral specimens from six continents, eventually descending to a secluded beach where you can cool off in the Black Sea.
11
Day 11
Free Morning in Batumi & Evening Train to Tbilisi
The morning is yours to enjoy Batumi at your own pace — return to a favorite café on the boulevard, browse the local market, or take a final swim in the Black Sea. Our team can arrange optional activities on request. In the afternoon, board a first-class train for the five-hour journey back to Tbilisi, watching the Georgian landscape transform from subtropical coast through mountain passes to the dry eastern plateau. Arrive in Tbilisi for a late dinner and final night at the family guesthouse.
12
Day 12
Departure from Tbilisi
Check out of the family guesthouse and transfer to Tbilisi International Airport for your departure flight. Depending on your flight time, enjoy a final stroll through the Old Town or pick up last-minute souvenirs — churchkhela from the market, a bottle of Saperavi, or hand-painted enamel from a Shardeni gallery.
