Mongolia Visa Requirements Overview

US citizens enjoy 90 days visa-free, while most European, Australian, and New Zealand visitors can stay up to 30 days without a visa. Visa-Free Entry (US, Canada, Germany, etc.)

30-90 Days

US citizens: 90 days within 180-day period (permanent). Canada: 30 days (permanent). Germany: 30 days (permanent). Russia, Turkey, Belarus: 30 days (permanent bilateral agreements). South Korea: 90 days (extended through December 2026). These arrangements are not affected by the temporary tourism exemption expiration.

Visa-Free Entry (34 Countries - Extended to Jan 2027)

eVisa (98 Countries)

30 Days

Available at http://www.evisa.mn for citizens of 98 countries. Tourist (K1), cultural/sports events (K4), and transit (K6 - up to 10 days) categories. Processing: 48-72 hours. Cost: ~$50-70 USD depending on nationality. Single entry only. Non-extendable and non-convertible. Print or save digital copy to present at border.

Visa on Arrival (Limited)

30 Days

Available ONLY for travelers from European countries without Mongolian diplomatic representation AND arriving at Chinggis Khaan International Airport. Requirements: completed application form, passport photo (3.5x4.5cm), hotel confirmation, return ticket. Transit visa also available at border (up to 10 days).

Embassy/Consulate Visa

30-365 Days

Required for: stays over 90 days, work, study, or nationalities not eligible for eVisa/visa-free. Single entry: ~$30 USD. Multiple entry (6 months): ~$70 USD. Multiple entry (1 year): ~$135 USD. Canadian/UK citizens: ~$55 USD. Processing: 2-5 business days. Long-term visas require pre-approval from Immigration Agency in Ulaanbaatar.

Important: MANDATORY REGISTRATION: All visitors must register with Mongolian Immigration within 48 hours of arrival (hotels typically handle this). 6 Months Validity Required
Must be valid for minimum 6 months (180 days) from date of arrival in Mongolia. At least one blank page required for entry stamp. Biometric data will be captured at border control upon arrival.
Immigration Registration
MANDATORY Within 48 Hours
ALL visitors must register with Mongolian Immigration within 48 hours of arrival. Hotels and accommodations typically handle this automatically. If staying independently or with friends, you must register yourself via the Immigration Agency website. Failure to register results in fines upon departure.
30+ Day Registration
Within 7 Days of Arrival
If staying MORE than 30 days, you MUST register at the Immigration Agency of Mongolia within 7 days of arrival. Your accommodation or tour operator can assist. Failure to register - even due to circumstances beyond your control - results in fines and potential exit denial.
Proof of Departure

Immigration officers may request proof of onward travel or return flight. Having confirmed booking documentation is advisable, especially for travelers without return tickets.
Currency Declaration
Required Over ~$4,370 USD
Mongolian law requires declaration of cash, financial instruments, and cryptocurrency valued at 15 million MNT or more (approximately $4,370 USD) upon both entry AND exit. Failure to declare can result in confiscation.

Visa-Free Entry - US Citizens

90 Days Within 180-Day Period

Permanent visa-free arrangement for US passport holders. Maximum 90 days per 180-day period. Registration required within 48 hours (all visitors) and within 7 days if staying over 30 days. No pre-approval or application needed.

Visa-Free Entry - 34 Countries

30 Days - Extended to Jan 1, 2027

Temporary exemption for EU countries, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and others. Valid until January 1, 2027. Tourism purposes only. Registration required. After January 2027, these nationalities (except Germany) will need eVisa.

Tourist eVisa (K1)

30 Days Single Entry - ~$50-70 USD

Apply online at http://www.evisa.mn. Upload passport scan, photo, complete application. Processing: 48-72 hours (standard), 3-5 days (busy periods). Non-extendable and non-convertible. Print or save digital copy for border presentation.

Tourist Visa - Embassy

30 Days - ~$30-55 USD

Apply at Mongolian embassy/consulate. Passport, application form, passport photo (3.5x4.5cm), travel itinerary. Hotel reservation and travel insurance recommended. Processing: 2-5 business days. Same-day service available for additional ~$30 fee.

Visa Extension

Up to 30 Additional Days

Tourist visas can be extended ONCE for up to 30 additional days. Apply at Immigration Agency in Ulaanbaatar at least 4 days BEFORE current visa expires. Simple reason (more exploration time) and fee required. Non-extendable eVisas cannot be extended - apply for embassy visa if longer stay planned.
