This 11-day expedition moves through three distinct ecosystems and two indigenous communities: two days in La Paz with local shoeshine guides, Andean shamans, and living street markets; three days deep inside Madidi National Park, one of the world’s most biodiverse protected areas, sleeping in suspended tents above Mashi Lagoon; and three nights with the Moseten and T’simane peoples of Asuncion del Quiquibey inside the Pilon Lajas Biosphere Reserve, one of the Amazon’s least-visited indigenous territories. Nights are split between a boutique La Paz hotel, rustic jungle bungalows, and a candlelit community lodge with no phone or internet, deep in primary rainforest.

Day 1
Arrival in La Paz: Shoeshine Guides & Street Markets
Your expedition begins with an arrival transfer to Hotel Anami, a beautifully restored 1920s house in La Paz's Sopocachi neighborhood at 3,600 meters, the highest capital city in the world. Meet your lustrabotas guide from the Hormigon Armado association, shoeshine workers who have walked the popular districts since 2005 and know them like no conventional guide can. Walk through the General Cemetery, then through the surrounding street markets: fish vendors, artisanal hat makers, medicinal plant stalls, hardware stores of every kind. The day closes with a welcome dinner of traditional Bolivian cuisine. Meals: D

Day 2
La Paz: Teleférico, Musef & a Shaman
Board the teleférico and glide over La Paz's canyon neighborhoods, looking down into courtyards where polleras and dance costumes hang to dry while the Cordillera Real rises in the distance. Lunch among the Paceños with grilled meat, aji sauce, and spicy soups. The afternoon is spent at the Musef, Bolivia's national ethnography and folklore museum, where feather headdresses, carnival masks, and a reconstructed Tsimane shaman trace the country's layered history from the Altiplano to the lowlands. The day closes with a yatiri ceremony: an Andean shaman invokes the Pachamama to guide and protect the expedition ahead. Meals: B / L / D

Day 3
La Paz to Rurrenabaque & the Yacuma Pampas
An early morning transfer to El Alto Airport for the 40-minute domestic flight to Rurrenabaque, the gateway to the Bolivian Amazon, situated at the foot of the last Andean foothills where the jungle begins. From Rurrenabaque, private transport takes you to Santa Rosa on the edge of the Yacuma Pampas: the pre-Amazonian wetland savannahs of the Beni region. Keep eyes open on the road. Capybaras, sloths, and dozens of bird species are common before you even reach the water. Board a motorboat and navigate the Yacuma River to the lodge, where the sounds of the Amazon replace everything else. Meals: B / L / D

Day 4
Into Madidi: Bala Canyon & Mashi Lagoon Camp
The day starts at 5am with the sound of red howler monkeys. A morning excursion through the Yacuma lagoons, where in the dry season anacondas, caimans, and pink river dolphins are all possible. Then board a motorboat up the Beni River through the dramatic Bala Canyon and onto the Tuichi River, four hours upstream to the trailhead. A 30-minute walk along the Wabu trail leads to Mashi Lagoon camp, where tents are suspended above the jungle floor. Afternoon walk along the Lucachi trail to macaw nesting grounds. After dark, a night walk in search of tarantulas and sword-nosed bats. Meals: B / L / D

Day 5
Madidi National Park: Primary Forest & Piranha Fishing
A full day in Madidi National Park, one of the most biodiverse protected areas on Earth. Morning walk through primary forest where some trees are over 300 years old, including the threatened Mara and bitter mahogany, with your guide explaining the ecology and conservation stakes of the park. Macaws, toucans, and crested hoazins fill the canopy. After lunch and the traditional afternoon siesta, paddle out on Mashi Lagoon and try piranha fishing. A good catch becomes the evening meal. As night falls, the guide shares tales and legends of the region. Meals: B / L / D

Day 6
Madidi: Medicinal Plants & Return to Rurrenabaque
Wake at 5am for a final hour at the Tuichi River. The jungle at sunrise, the sky shifting color, and the red howler monkeys calling for their mates as the bird orchestra signals a new day. After breakfast, the guide leads a session on medicinal plants used by the Amazonian communities: what they treat, how they are harvested, and what the outside world has taken from this knowledge without acknowledgment. After lunch and siesta, board the motorboat for the downstream return to Rurrenabaque, arriving in the late afternoon with time to shower and rest at Hotel Maya on the riverside. Meals: B / L / D

Asuncion del Quiquibey is home to the Moseten and T'simane peoples, who consider themselves children of the rainforest. Welcomed with a few words in Moseten, settle into basic candlelit bungalows perfectly adapted to this environment. In the afternoon, a local guide leads a walk through the community's hunting and fruit-picking trails, sharing the forest's medicinal plant knowledge. Dinner at the lodge under a canopy of stars. Meals: B / L / D

Day 8
Caimans, the Mapajo Tree & Life on the River
The most common surname in the community is Caimani, and you understand why on a pirogue trip up the Quiquibey, where these reptiles are everywhere. The river is rich with parrots, monkeys, capybaras, and not rarely in the dry season, jaguar pawprints freshly pressed into the riverbank mud. After fishing with your guide, the afternoon highlight is a visit to the Mapajo: one of the largest trees in the Bolivian Amazon, sacred to the Moseten as the protector of all fauna and flora. Standing beneath it, deep in primary forest, is the kind of moment that reframes things. Meals: B / L / D

A final morning with the Moseten community: pound rice, harvest coconuts, try archery, and learn to weave natural fibers alongside community members who share these skills not as performance for visitors but as the texture of their everyday lives. Enter a traditional Moseten family home and share a simple meal with your hosts. Then back to the pirogue for the downstream journey on the Quiquibey and Beni rivers to Rurrenabaque, arriving in time for a hot shower and a quiet evening at Hotel Maya. Meals: B / L

The afternoon is free: the craft stalls of Sagarnaga Street, the Witches Market with its Pachamama offerings, or the cable car lines crossing the city's canyon neighborhoods with views to Illimani. The expedition closes at Pena Huari, a traditional Bolivian pena where professional folkloric dancers perform through dinner in full regional costume. Each dance carries its own story: love rituals, battles between good and evil, devotion to the Pachamama. Meals: B / D

We recommend booking 6-12 months in advance, especially for remote destinations like Greenland or Madagascar. This allows time for permit processing, securing the best local guides, and ensuring accommodation availability in these pristine, limited-access locations.
Each adventure includes expert local guides, unique accommodations, all transportation within the destination, most meals featuring local cuisine, and exclusive access to experiences unavailable to mass tourism. International flights and personal travel insurance are typically separate.
We design adventures for various fitness levels and always discuss physical requirements during planning. Many of our destinations offer different activity intensities, and we can customize experiences to match your capabilities while still providing authentic wilderness encounters.
We partner exclusively with local operators who share our conservation values, ensure tourism revenue supports local communities, limit group sizes to minimize environmental impact, and contribute directly to conservation projects in each destination we visit.
We understand plans can change. Our cancellation policy varies by destination and timing, but we always work to minimize fees and maximize flexibility. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance and will provide guidance on the best policies for adventure travel.
While we specialize in our core destinations, we can create custom adventures to other remote, wild places that align with our mission of authentic, sustainable travel. Contact us to discuss your dream destination and we'll explore possibilities.
We focus exclusively on authentic, off-the-beaten-path destinations that most travelers never reach. Our deep partnerships with local communities, commitment to conservation, and rejection of mass tourism create truly transformative experiences that benefit both travelers and destinations.
Safety is our top priority. Our local partners are extensively vetted and trained in wilderness safety and emergency protocols. We provide comprehensive safety briefings, maintain communication equipment, and have established emergency evacuation procedures for all our remote destinations.
