Khevsureti

Deep in Georgia's Greater Caucasus, where the mountains form the ancient boundary between Europe and Asia, lies Khevsureti—a land of extraordinary fortress villages, warrior traditions, and haunting beauty. At 1,400 meters in the Arghuni Gorge, the medieval fortress-village of Shatili rises as a single unified fortification of 60 stone towers, its interconnected passages allowing entire communities to move unseen during siege. The Khevsurs who built these fortresses were legendary warriors, wearing chainmail and bearing broadswords adorned with crosses, their religion a striking fusion of Orthodox Christianity and pre-Christian cults that survives to this day.

Getting to Khevsureti

Marshrutka from Tbilisi

5 hours 30 GEL one-way
A 4x4 marshrutka van departs Tbilisi's Didube Station on Saturday mornings at 10 AM, returning from Shatili on Sunday at noon. The route crosses the dramatic 2,676-meter Datvijvari Pass before descending to Shatili.
Insider Tip
Service operates seasonally (mid-June through late September only). Arrive 30 minutes early to secure a seat. Buy tickets at the counter serving the Mtskheta direction. Call driver Irakli (+995 555 40 45 99) to reserve in advance.

Private 4x4 Hire

4-5 hours From $150-200 USD
Hire a 4x4 vehicle with driver from Tbilisi for flexible exploration. Essential for reaching Mutso, the Abudelauri Lakes trailhead at Roshka, and exploring the region at your own pace. Most vehicles can reach Barisakho; 4x4 required beyond.
Insider Tip
Book a driver experienced with the Khevsureti road. Check conditions before departing—the road closes after heavy rain or fog on the pass. Allow extra time for photo stops at Lebaiskari Tower and Datvijvari Pass viewpoints.

Barisakho + Local Driver

6+ hours total ~70 GEL total
Daily marshrutka to Barisakho departs Didube at 5 PM (20 GEL, 2.5 hours). From Barisakho, hire a local driver for the remaining journey to Shatili over Datvijvari Pass (150-200 GEL) or hitchhike.
Insider Tip
Useful if you miss the Saturday Shatili marshrutka. Barisakho has basic guesthouses if you need to overnight. This is remote territory—bring cash as there are no ATMs in Upper Khevsureti.
