Ushguli

Ushguli, Georgia

At 2,100 meters in Georgia's Greater Caucasus, Ushguli stands as one of Europe's highest continuously inhabited settlements—a UNESCO World Heritage Site where stone defensive towers from the 9th-12th centuries rise against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Shkhara, Georgia's highest peak at 5,201 meters. This remote community of four medieval villages preserves the living culture of the Svan people, whose distinct language, UNESCO-recognized polyphonic singing traditions, and blend of Christianity with ancient pagan practices have survived centuries of isolation. Here, life moves to rhythms unchanged since the Bronze Age.
