Discover Khevsureti

Khevsureti occupies 1,050 square kilometers of some of Georgia’s most dramatic mountain terrain, straddling both sides of the Greater Caucasus watershed—technically placing it on the boundary between Europe and Asia. For centuries, this remote region served as Georgia’s northern shield against invaders from the North Caucasus. The Khevsurs built their villages not as collections of houses but as unified fortifications, with tower-dwellings connected by rooftop passages and hidden corridors that allowed entire communities to move defensively as one.

Shatili, the region’s iconic fortress-village at 1,400 meters in the Arghuni Gorge, exemplifies this architecture. Its 60 towers cluster together into what appears to be a single massive castle growing from the mountainside. The complex developed over centuries, primarily during the 12th-18th centuries, and remains on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List. Twelve kilometers beyond, the ghost fortress of Mutso clings to a near-vertical cliff at 1,880 meters—its 30 fortified dwellings and four combat towers recently restored with Europa Nostra Award-winning conservation work.
