Kakheti Georgia

Kakheti Georgia

In the sun-drenched Alazani Valley, where the Greater Caucasus rises as a dramatic backdrop to endless vineyards, lies the birthplace of wine itself: Kakheti Georgia. Archaeological evidence confirms that 8,000 years ago—millennia before ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia—the people of this region were fermenting grapes in clay qvevri vessels buried underground. Today, Kakheti produces over 70% of Georgia's wine using methods unchanged since the Neolithic era. In 2013, UNESCO inscribed traditional qvevri winemaking as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. From the hilltop charm of Sighnaghi to the monastic cellars of Alaverdi Cathedral, this is wine country like nowhere else on Earth.

Getting to Kakheti Georgia

Choose your route. Every option arrives at the same destination.

Marshrutka to Sighnaghi

1.5-2 hours
Journey Time
7-10 GEL one-way
Approximate Cost
Marshrutka vans depart Tbilisi's Samgori Metro Station approximately every 2 hours from 9 AM to 6 PM. The route follows the Kakheti Highway through flat farmland before climbing into Sighnaghi's hilltop streets.
Insider Tip
Arrive 30 minutes early to secure a seat. The final 18km into Sighnaghi winds through forest—sit on the right for valley views. Buy return tickets in advance as vans fill quickly.

Marshrutka to Telavi

2-2.5 hours
Journey Time
15 GEL one-way
Approximate Cost
Vans depart Tbilisi's Ortachala Station (or Samgori) hourly throughout the day. Most take the longer Kakheti Highway route through Gurjaani; some use the scenic Gombori Pass (when open).
Insider Tip
The Gombori Pass route is shorter but has tight curves. If prone to motion sickness, request the highway route. Telavi's bus station is a 5-minute walk from the town center.

Private Driver/Wine Tour

1.5-3 hours
Journey Time
150-200 GEL/day
Approximate Cost
Hire a driver in Tbilisi or through your guesthouse for flexible wine touring. Essential for visiting multiple wineries, monasteries, and villages in a single day. Most drivers know the region intimately.
Insider Tip
Book a driver who won't drink—Georgia has strict 0.03 BAC limits. Arrange stops in advance. Allow a full day to properly explore the Alazani Valley wineries and monasteries.

Why Travel with Us

Travel with EcoVoyager

Kakheti lies just 90-150 kilometers east of Tbilisi, making it Georgia's most accessible wine region. Marshrutka vans depart Tbilisi's Samgori Station for Sighnaghi (1.5-2 hours, 7-10 GEL) and from Ortachala Station for Telavi (2-2.5 hours, 15 GEL). The scenic Gombori Pass route to Telavi offers mountain views but requires experienced drivers. For wine touring, hiring a private driver (150-200 GEL/day) allows stops at multiple wineries and monasteries. The region operates year-round, with harvest season (Rtveli) in September-October offering the most immersive experience.

Family winery visits with qvevri tastings
Rtveli harvest participation (September-October)
Traditional supra feasting with local families
Monastery wine cellar experiences at Alaverdi and Ikalto
