Stories from Isalo National Park
Madagascar's Grand Canyon
Isalo National Park protects 81,540 hectares of eroded sandstone massif in southern Madagascar—a landscape so dramatic it’s earned the nickname ‘the Colorado of Madagascar.’ The park’s Jurassic-era formations, dating back 180 million years, have been sculpted by wind and water into a fantasy of canyons up to 200 meters deep, flat-topped buttes, and bizarre pinnacles called ‘ruiniforms’ for their resemblance to ancient ruins. Iron and mineral deposits paint the rock in bands of ochre, rust, and gold that blaze at sunrise and sunset.
Established in 1962 and now Madagascar’s most visited protected area, Isalo encompasses six distinct habitats within its sandstone labyrinth. Deep canyon floors shelter humid gallery forests of endemic palms, pandanus, and tapia trees, while the exposed plateaus support fire-resistant grasslands and drought-adapted succulents. Between these extremes lie hidden oases—natural swimming pools fed by crystalline waterfalls where travelers cool off after traversing the sun-baked highlands above. The park serves as the region’s most important freshwater reservoir, its canyons channeling permanent rivers through an otherwise arid landscape.
