Things to Do in Nosy Be
Starting points for your perfect trip
Whale Shark Encounter
Slip into warm Mozambique Channel waters to swim alongside the world's largest fish from September to December. Local spotters track juvenile whale sharks—some reaching 8 meters—filtering plankton near the surface, offering intimate encounters with these gentle giants.
Lokobe Rainforest Trek
Paddle a traditional pirogue through mangrove channels to reach Nosy Be's last primary rainforest. Trek with guides to encounter black lemurs, panther chameleons, leaf-tailed geckos, and one of the world's smallest frogs—all endemic to this 740-hectare sanctuary protected since 1926.
Nosy Iranja Sandbar
Experience Nosy Iranja's twin islands, connected by a 1.2-kilometer sandbar that emerges at low tide like a white ribbon across turquoise waters. Walk between islands, snorkel with hawksbill and green turtles in their nesting sanctuary, and explore a fishing village unchanged for generations.
Humpback Whale Watching
Join marine conservationists from July through October as humpback whales migrate to Madagascar's warm waters to breed and calve. Witness mothers with curious calves, males in spectacular breaching displays, and possibly encounter the rare Omura's whale—first documented in these waters in 2013.

Stories from Nosy Be
The Perfumed Island
Nosy Be—meaning ‘Big Island’ in Malagasy—rises from the warm waters of the Mozambique Channel just eight kilometers off Madagascar’s northwest coast. This 320-square-kilometer volcanic island earned its nickname ‘Nosy Manitra’ (the Perfumed Island) from the intoxicating fragrance of its ylang-ylang plantations, whose golden flowers have supplied the world’s finest perfumeries since the early 1900s. The scent mingles with vanilla, coffee, and cocoa on breezes that sweep across eleven crater lakes and lush hillsides rising to Mont Passot’s 329-meter summit.
The island’s history stretches back to the 9th century, when Arab traders established Mahilika—which by 1200 had become Madagascar’s most important trading post. Swahili and Indian merchants followed, leaving cultural imprints still visible in the architecture of Hell-Ville, the main town named for French Admiral Anne de Hell. Today, the Sakalava and Antakarana peoples maintain traditions around sacred banyan trees and crater lakes believed to harbor the spirits of ancient kings in the form of crocodiles—places where swimming remains strictly forbidden.
