Stories from Tsingy de Bemaraha
A Landscape Like No Other
Two hundred million years ago, layers of calcite accumulated at the bottom of a Jurassic lagoon, slowly forming a massive limestone bed beneath ancient seas. When tectonic forces lifted this seabed skyward and ice ages exposed the rock, nature began its patient sculpture. Tropical monsoon rains—slightly acidic from atmospheric carbon dioxide—carved vertical fissures into the limestone, washing away softer rock while leaving harder ridges standing. The result is a 152,000-hectare ‘forest’ of razor-sharp stone pinnacles, some rising 100 meters from the forest floor.
The Malagasy word ‘tsingy’ perfectly captures this landscape—it means both ‘walking on tiptoes’ and ‘where one cannot walk barefoot.’ The peaks are genuinely knife-edged, capable of shredding boots and skin. Yet between these mineral spires lies a different world entirely: lush canyons filled with dry deciduous forest, underground rivers threading through limestone caves, and ecosystems so unique that 85% of the species found here exist nowhere else on Earth. UNESCO recognized this extraordinary place as a World Heritage Site in 1990.
