Stories from Prometheus Cave
The Titan's Prison: Myth and Discovery
Greek mythology tells of Prometheus, the Titan who defied Zeus by stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humanity. As punishment, Zeus ordered Prometheus chained to a rock in the Caucasus Mountains, where an eagle would devour his liver daily—only for it to regenerate each night. Local Georgian legend identifies nearby Mount Khvamli, visible from the cave, as the site of Prometheus’s eternal torment.
The cave itself remained hidden until July 15, 1984, when speleologists from the Vakhushti Bagrationi Institute of Geography—led by Jumber Jishkariani with team members Tamaz Kobulashvili, Amiran Jamrishvili, and Vakhtang Kapanadze—discovered this subterranean wonderland near Kumistavi village. Originally named Kumistavi Cave after the Kumi River flowing through its depths, the site was renamed in 2010 when President Mikheil Saakashvili visited and suggested honoring the mythological connection to Georgia’s mountains.
