Georgia Queen Tamar's Mountain Kingdom

Vardzia

Carved into the volcanic cliffs of Erusheti Mountain, Vardzia stands as Georgia's most spectacular testament to medieval ambition. This 12th-century cave city—once home to 2,000 monks across 6,000 apartments spanning thirteen floors—was the crowning achievement of Georgia's Golden Age under the legendary Queen Tamar. Walking through the labyrinth of rock-hewn churches, wine cellars, pharmacies, and living quarters connected by tunnels stretching 500 meters along the cliff face, you encounter the Church of the Dormition with its vivid frescoes including one of only three surviving portraits of Tamar herself. Though a devastating 1283 earthquake revealed the cave city's honeycomb interior to the world, monks have returned to keep the sacred flame burning in this extraordinary monument where Georgian Christianity, royal ambition, and engineering genius converged.
