Things to Do in Tikal National Park
Starting points for your perfect trip
Gran Plaza at Dawn
The Gran Plaza is Tikal's ceremonial core—Temple I (47m) to the east, Temple II (38m) to the west. Completed in 732 AD as a funerary pyramid for Jasaw Chan K'awiil, whose jade-laden tomb is one of the richest Classic Maya burials on record. The North Acropolis holds twelve temples dating to 350 BC.
Temple IV
At 65m, Temple IV is Tikal's tallest structure, second-tallest pre-Columbian in the western hemisphere. Built around 741 AD, its summit reveals roofcombs of Temples I, II, and III above the canopy. Sunrise with howler monkeys is Tikal's signature experience. It was the Star Wars IV rebel base.
Mundo Perdido
El Mundo Perdido is Tikal's oldest complex. The Great Pyramid (32m, 700 BC) contains four earlier pyramids and served as an astronomical observatory for solstice and equinox alignments. Quieter than the Gran Plaza, with elevated views across the temple-tops and consistent spider monkey activity.
Wildlife at Dawn and Dusk
Hunting prohibition since 1955 has produced unusually unafraid wildlife. Howler monkeys fill the forest before sunrise; spider monkeys range near Temple IV; coatis forage the causeways. Ocellated turkeys walk the plazas. Over 333 bird species documented. Jaguars and tapirs require remote-forest walk
Yaxha: The Third City
Yaxha, 30 km southeast of Tikal, is Guatemala's third-largest Maya city. Over 500 structures remain jungle-covered within the Maya Biosphere Reserve. At sunset, its highest temple overlooks the lake with no modern infrastructure visible. EcoVoyager includes Yaxha on all multi-day Petén programs.
North Acropolis and the Stela Field
The North Acropolis spans 700 years of construction, earliest structures dating to 350 BC, and served as Tikal's royal funerary complex. Its stela field holds the oldest carved stela in Mesoamerica (292 AD) and Stela 31, one of Maya epigraphy's most important dynastic texts.
