Things to Do in Bishkek
Starting points for your perfect trip
Ala Archa Glacier Trek
Ala Archa National Park starts 40km south, where peaks erupt to 4,895 meters. The 8km trail to Ak-Sai Waterfall introduces the park; the challenging push to Ak-Sai Glacier at 3,300 meters rewards with raw Tian Shan ice. Over 800 plant species and rare ibex inhabit these slopes.
Burana Tower & Balasagun Ruins
Journey 80km east to the 11th-century Burana Tower, sole remnant of Balasagun—a Karakhanid capital medieval maps placed at the world's center. Climb the 25-meter minaret for valley views and explore the field of Turkic balbal stone warriors dating to the 6th–10th centuries.
Chon-Kemin Valley Horse Trek
Ride through Kyrgyzstan's longest gorge—100km of alpine valleys between Tian Shan ranges. Chon-Kemin National Park harbors snow leopards, brown bears, and golden eagles. Stay in village guesthouses, learn nomadic horsemanship, and sleep under Central Asia's darkest skies.
Ala-Too Square & Osh Bazaar
At Ala-Too Square, a 17-meter Manas statue replaced Lenin in 2011. The State Historical Museum houses 90,000 artifacts spanning prehistory to independence. Nearby, Osh Bazaar fills an entire city block with spices, textiles, and fresh beshbarmak ingredients.
Issyk-Ata Hot Springs & Soviet Sanatorium
Drive 77km east to Issyk-Ata Gorge at 1,775 meters, where mineral waters surface at 54°C year-round. Mentioned in 7th-century Silk Road manuscripts, the springs became a sanatorium in 1891. A Soviet-era Buddha carving overlooks the valley, and trout fill the river below.
Konorchek Canyon Red Rock Hike
Two hours east in Boom Gorge, Paleogene sandstone spires rise in vivid red formations locals call the Eolian Castles. A one-hour trail follows a dried riverbed through narrow passages to a plateau with panoramic views. The 40-million-year-old deposits are shaped by millennia of wind erosion.

Stories from Bishkek
Central Asia's Greenest Capital
Bishkek defies expectations of a Central Asian capital. Sprawling across the Chuy Valley at 800 meters elevation, the city earns its reputation as the region’s greenest metropolis—more trees per capita than any other Central Asian city, with leafy boulevards of poplar, oak, and elm providing welcome shade against summer heat that can reach 43°C. The dramatic backdrop of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, rising to nearly 5,000 meters, provides a constant reminder that wilderness begins where the city ends. Ala Archa National Park’s glaciers glint just 40 kilometers to the south, visible from rooftops on clear days, and the city’s 2,500 annual sunshine hours ensure the mountains rarely hide behind clouds.
The city’s history reflects Central Asia’s turbulent past. The Kokand Khanate established a fortress here in 1825 to control Silk Road caravan routes and collect tribute from Kyrgyz tribes. Russian forces destroyed that fortress in 1862, establishing a settlement called Pishpek—named, according to local legend, for the wooden paddle used to churn kumys, the fermented mare’s milk still beloved today. The population remained just 14,000 until industrialization transformed the settlement during and after World War II, when factories relocated from European Russia brought workers and refugees, including an estimated 45,000 Jews fleeing Nazi advance. Today approximately 1.2 million people call Bishkek home.
