Things to Do in Ala Archa National Park
Starting points for your perfect trip
Ak-Sai Glacier Trek
Hike 6.4 kilometers from Alplager base camp to Ak-Sai Waterfall, then continue to the glacier at 3,300 meters. The trail gains 1,100 meters through wildflower meadows and marmot colonies to an ice amphitheater beneath Korona Peak’s jagged towers.
Ratsek Hut Mountaineering Base
Trek to Ratsek Hut at 3,400 meters—a 1960s stone shelter that trained Soviet climbers. It serves as base camp for summiting Korona Peak at 4,860 meters, Free Korea Peak at 4,740 meters, and Semenov-Tian-Shansky at 4,895 meters, the Kyrgyz Ala-Too’s highest.
Adygene Valley & Glacier Lake
Escape the crowds on the 20-kilometer round trip to Adygene Lake, a turquoise glacial tarn at 3,560 meters. Pass the climbers’ cemetery—a memorial to fallen mountaineers—then ascend through spruce forest and alpine meadows to this glacier-fed lake in solitude.
Alpinada Festival Climb
Join the annual May 1st Alpinada festival, a tradition since 1967. The mass ascent of Peak Komsomolets at 4,200 meters draws everyone from children to grandmothers, celebrating Kyrgyzstan’s climbing heritage with overnight camping and a communal summit sunrise.
Winter Ice Climbing on Korona’s North Face
Tackle frozen Ak-Sai Waterfall and ice routes on Korona Peak’s north face during winter, when Ala Archa transforms into Central Asia’s premier alpine ice climbing destination. Experienced guides provide technical gear and instruction for routes ranging from beginner WI2 to expert WI5.
Peak Uchitel Summit
Summit Peak Uchitel at 4,527 meters—the standard acclimatization climb before attempting Korona or Semenov-Tian-Shansky. This non-technical but physically demanding route requires no ropes or climbing gear, rewarding strong hikers with 360-degree views across the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range.

Stories from Ala Archa National Park
Where the Tian Shan Meets the City
Ala Archa represents one of the world’s most accessible high-alpine experiences—a fully developed national park where snow leopards prowl within 40 kilometers of a capital city. Established in 1976 by decree of the Kyrgyz SSR Council of Ministers, the park protects approximately 200 square kilometers (16,485 hectares) of the northern slopes of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range. Elevations span from 1,500 meters at the entrance gate to 4,895 meters at Peak Semenov-Tian-Shansky, the highest summit in the entire range.
The park’s biodiversity reflects this dramatic elevation gradient. Over 800 vascular plant species thrive here, including the variegated juniper that gives the park its name—“ala archa” translates as “bright juniper” or “multicolored juniper” in Kyrgyz. These aromatic trees hold special cultural significance; Kyrgyz people have traditionally burned juniper wood to chase away evil spirits, though folklore warns against planting archa near homes, as it supposedly drains human energy. Wildlife populations include 40 mammal species, 160 bird species, and the Amu Darya trout, studied in a special reservoir on the Kargay-Bulak River. Most famously, the park harbors snow leopards in its upper reaches—one was photographed by park cameras for the first time in May 2017.
