Things to Do in Skazka Canyon
Starting points for your perfect trip
Sunset Photography Walk
Explore the canyon’s most photogenic formations during golden hour, when iron-rich sandstone glows vivid red and orange against snow-capped Terskey Alatoo peaks. The 2-kilometer trail passes the Chinese Wall, Castle, and Dragon’s Spine with panoramic viewpoints over Issyk-Kul.
South Shore Canyon Circuit
Combine Skazka with Jeti-Oguz’s Seven Bulls red rock formations and Broken Heart cliff for a full day exploring Issyk-Kul’s dramatic south shore. The 80-kilometer route between Bokonbayevo and Karakol connects two of Central Asia’s most striking geological sites through Kyrgyz villages.
Barskoon Waterfall & Canyon Day
Journey from Skazka’s red formations to Barskoon Valley’s cascading 24-meter waterfall, fed by glacial meltwater from the Terskey Alatoo. Visit the Yuri Gagarin monument where the cosmonaut recuperated in 1961 after his spaceflight, carved into a boulder at 2,324 meters elevation.
Eagle Hunting & Canyon Experience
Combine Skazka Canyon with a traditional eagle hunting demonstration in nearby Bokonbayevo, meeting berkutchi hunters who maintain the ancient Kyrgyz art of hunting with golden eagles. Two iconic aspects of Kyrgyz heritage—otherworldly geology and nomadic falconry tradition—in a single day.
Manjyly-Ata Sacred Springs Pilgrimage
Visit the sacred spring valley of Manjyly-Ata, 10 kilometers from Bokonbayevo, where 17 healing springs flow beneath sacred willows in a labyrinth of clay gorges. Mentioned in the Manas epic, this pilgrimage site blends pre-Islamic Tengrism with Sufi heritage dating to the 17th century.
Issyk-Kul’s Sunken Civilizations
Explore the shoreline where underwater archaeologists discovered 2,500-year-old Saka burial sites and a medieval Silk Road settlement that sank after a 15th-century earthquake. A guided walk along the south shore connects Skazka’s geology to the lake’s hidden history beneath its surface.

Stories from Skazka Canyon
Where Ancient Seas Became Stone
The rocks beneath your feet at Skazka Canyon began forming during the Neogene period, when shallow seas, rivers, and lakes covered the Issyk-Kul basin. Layer upon layer of sand, silt, and clay accumulated over millions of years, compressing into the sandstone and conglomerate formations visible today. As the Tian Shan mountains rose through tectonic uplift, these ancient seabeds lifted with them—eventually emerging as the dramatic landscape you see today at approximately 1,700 meters elevation.
The canyon’s distinctive palette comes from iron oxides, primarily hematite, that formed when iron-bearing minerals oxidized upon exposure to air and water. Remarkably, variations of just 0.2-0.7% in iron content produce dramatically different colors—from cream and pink to deep crimson and burnt orange. Four erosion processes continue sculpting these formations: wind carrying abrasive sand particles, occasional rainfall cutting through soft sediments, frost wedging from freeze-thaw cycles, and thermal expansion from Central Asia’s extreme temperature swings. The canyon you photograph today will look subtly different in a decade.
