Pakistan Where Giants Walk and Flowers Bloom at the Roof of the World

Deosai National Park

Rising above 4,000 meters in the western Himalayas lies Deosai—the second-highest plateau on Earth and one of Pakistan's last truly wild frontiers. The name means 'Land of Giants' in the local Shina language, and standing amid its endless rolling grasslands, the mythology feels earned. This is where the critically endangered Himalayan brown bear roams freely, where Sheosar Lake reflects the distant summit of Nanga Parbat, and where EcoVoyager guides you through landscapes that sleep beneath snow for eight months before transforming into wildflower carpets so vivid they seem painted rather than grown.

Best Time to Visit Deosai National Park

Summer
July – August
37–66°F Moderate (40–60mm)
Peak
The optimal window for Deosai. Daytime temperatures reach 15–19°C with wildflower meadows at their most spectacular in July. Brown bears are actively foraging with cubs, marmot colonies are busy, and all camping facilities are operational. Book 4x4 transport well in advance—peak domestic tourism season.
Opening Season
June
28–59°F Moderate (30–50mm)
Shoulder
The plateau emerges from winter as snow melts through mid-June, with roads typically opening June 15–20. Expect cold conditions (5–13°C daytime), patchy snow, and muddy tracks requiring experienced 4x4 drivers. Wildflowers are just beginning and bears have recently emerged from hibernation. Near-total solitude but bring cold-weather gear.
Autumn
September – October
19–57°F Low (10–30mm)
Good
Cooling rapidly with golden-brown grasslands and exceptional clarity for Nanga Parbat views. September offers comfortable 5–15°C days with thinning crowds. October brings freezing nights and increasing snow risk—the park typically closes by late October. Fewer services available; confirm camp operations before visiting.
Winter
November – May
-4–39°F Heavy (250–400mm as snow)
Offseason
The plateau lies buried under meters of snow with temperatures plunging to -20°C or below. All roads are completely impassable and the park is officially closed. No infrastructure operates. Only expedition-grade winter crossings on foot are theoretically possible—not recommended for tourism.

Travel Logistics

Getting to Deosai National Park

Fly to Skardu

1 hour flight From $60-100 USD one-way
PIA and Airblue operate daily flights from Islamabad to Skardu during peak season (June-September). The one-hour flight offers spectacular views over K2, Nanga Parbat, and the Karakoram Range—considered one of the world's most scenic commercial routes.
Insider Tip
Book flights well in advance for July-August travel as seats fill quickly. Morning flights have better visibility and fewer weather cancellations. Flights are weather-dependent—build flexibility into your itinerary as delays and cancellations are common when clouds obscure the mountain approaches.

Overland from Islamabad

12-14 hours by road From $200-300 USD per vehicle
The Karakoram Highway route covers approximately 640 kilometers from Islamabad to Skardu. The journey passes through dramatic gorges along the Indus River, with the final stretch offering views of Nanga Parbat. An alternative summer route via Babusar Pass (N-15) is shorter but only open June-October.
Insider Tip
Break the journey with an overnight in Chilas or along the Karakoram Highway. The Babusar Pass route is more scenic but adds altitude; ensure proper acclimatization. Bring motion sickness medication—mountain roads are winding. Stock up on snacks and water before leaving Islamabad.

Skardu to Deosai Transfer

1.5-2 hours to park entrance Included in tour packages
From Skardu, the park entrance via Sadpara Lake is approximately 30 kilometers. The route passes the beautiful Sadpara Lake before climbing into the mountains. A 4x4 vehicle is essential—the unpaved road is rough with steep sections and river crossings that challenge ordinary vehicles.
Insider Tip
The Skardu route is steeper and rougher but shorter. The alternative Astore route (via Chilam) is longer but smoother for standard vehicles. Within the park, distances between attractions span 70+ kilometers on unpaved tracks. Experienced local drivers are essential—the plateau has no marked roads and conditions change rapidly.
