K2 Base Camp

K2 Base Camp, Pakistan

Stand at the foot of the world's second-highest mountain—and by many measures its most dangerous. K2 rises 8,611 meters above the Karakoram, a perfect pyramid of rock and ice that has claimed one life for every four who have reached its summit. The trek to base camp follows the 63-kilometer Baltoro Glacier, the fifth-longest outside polar regions, through a cathedral of peaks including the Trango Towers, Masherbrum, and Gasherbrum IV. At Concordia, where glaciers converge at 4,700 meters, photographer Galen Rowell stood and called it the 'Throne Room of the Mountain Gods.' K2's south face rises 3,600 meters directly above in a 360-degree amphitheater of four 8,000-meter peaks. Few places on Earth concentrate this much vertical drama into a single view.

Stories from K2 Base Camp

Climate Overview
Concordia at 4,700 meters has a high-altitude arctic climate with summer daytime highs of 5–10°C, winter lows plunging below –30°C, and a narrow trekking window from June through early September when the Baltoro Glacier is passable.
Plan Your Journey

Best Time to Visit K2 Base Camp

Peak Trekking Season
July – August
46–50°F Low (10–30mm)
Peak
The prime window for K2 Base Camp. The Baltoro Glacier is at its most navigable, Concordia's camps are established, and daylight stretches past 14 hours. July and August offer the highest chance of clear views of K2's south face, with stable weather between monsoon pulses that rarely reach this far into the Karakoram. Expedition climbing teams are active above base camp, adding drama to the scene. Temperatures at Concordia reach 5–10°C by day but drop well below freezing at night. Book well in advance—this window fills months ahead.
Early & Late Season
June / September
39–45°F Moderate (20–40mm)
Good
June treks encounter more snow on the upper Baltoro, particularly above Goro, and fresh crevasses complicate glacier travel. The reward is quieter trails and peaks still heavy with winter snow. September offers clearer skies and golden light but shorter days and rapidly dropping temperatures—expect nights below –15°C at Concordia. The Gondogoro La crossing becomes risky by mid-September as fresh snow obscures the route. Both shoulder months require more experienced trekkers comfortable with variable conditions and colder camping. Porters and guides are more readily available than peak season.
Mountain Winter
October – May
0–32°F Moderate as snow (20–50mm)
Offseason
The Baltoro is effectively closed from October through May. Heavy snowfall buries the glacier route, Concordia temperatures drop below –30°C, and winds at exposed camps exceed 100 km/h. The jeep track from Skardu to Askole becomes impassable after autumn landslides, and porter teams do not operate. Even the flight from Islamabad to Skardu cancels frequently through winter. This is elite mountaineering territory only—the first winter ascent of K2 was not completed until January 2021, by ten Nepali climbers led by Nirmal Purja and Mingma Gyalje Sherpa.

Travel Logistics

Getting to K2 Base Camp

Choose your route. Every option arrives at the same destination.

Fly Islamabad to Skardu

1 hour flight
Journey Time
From $80-150 USD one-way
Approximate Cost
PIA operates daily flights from Islamabad to Skardu, weather permitting. The flight offers spectacular aerial views of Nanga Parbat and the western Karakoram before landing in the broad Skardu valley at 2,230 meters. This ancient Balti kingdom, sometimes called 'Little Tibet,' serves as the gateway to all Karakoram expeditions.
Insider Tip
Book with flexibility—PIA flights cancel frequently due to weather and cloud cover in the mountain corridor, so always have two or three backup days in your itinerary, and note that the overland drive from Islamabad via the KKH takes 18–24 hours as an alternative.

Jeep to Askole

6-8 hours from Skardu
Journey Time
From $200-300 USD per vehicle
Approximate Cost
The 160-kilometer jeep journey from Skardu to Askole follows the Shigar and Braldu rivers through increasingly remote valleys. The track is rough and exposed in places, requiring experienced local drivers. Askole at 3,040 meters is the last permanent settlement before the glaciers, where Balti porters join the expedition and final preparations are made.
Insider Tip
The jeep track can close due to landslides or flooding after rain, so build flexibility into your schedule, stock up on any personal supplies in Skardu since Askole has only basic provisions, and plan to meet your porter team here—typically Balti men whose families have worked these glaciers for generations.

Trek to Concordia & K2 Base Camp

7-10 days each way
Journey Time
Included in trek package
Approximate Cost
The 63-kilometer trek from Askole to K2 Base Camp climbs 2,100 meters over 7–10 days, with camps at Jhola, Paiju, Khoburtse, Urdukas, Goro, and Concordia before the final push to base camp at 5,150 meters. Rest days at Paiju and Urdukas aid acclimatization. The return trek typically takes 4–5 days.
Insider Tip
Acclimatization is critical—do not rush past the built-in rest days at Paiju and Urdukas, as the trek requires expedition-level fitness and comfort with glacier travel, and most trekkers benefit from spending at least one full night at Concordia before pushing to K2 Base Camp for the complete experience.
