Things to Do in K2 Base Camp
Starting points for your perfect trip
K2 Base Camp & Concordia Trek
Trek 63 km up the Baltoro Glacier from Askole, passing Trango Towers and Cathedral Spires, camping beneath Masherbrum and Gasherbrum IV. Reach Concordia where glaciers converge at 4,700m, then K2 Base Camp at 5,150m beneath the world's most formidable peak.
Gondogoro La Crossing
For experienced trekkers seeking the ultimate challenge. Cross Gondogoro La at 5,585m—one of few places with views of four 8,000m peaks: K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and II. Fixed ropes and crampons required. Descend through the Hushe Valley for a complete Karakoram traverse.
Gilkey Memorial & Mountaineering History
Pay respects at the cairn honoring climbers lost on K2 since 1953. Learn the story of Pete Schoening's legendary ice axe arrest—'The Belay'—saving six falling climbers. Stand where the 1954 Italian first ascent began and where K2 resisted winter attempts until 2021.
Broad Peak Base Camp Circuit
Visit Broad Peak Base Camp at 4,850m for views of K2's south face often clearer than from K2 Base Camp itself. The perspective on Concordia—framed by Mitre Peak, Chogolisa, and the Gasherbrums—is unmatched, and sunset alpenglow paints the giants in sequence.
Trango Towers & Baltoro Granite Walls
The Baltoro approach passes beneath some of Earth's most dramatic vertical rock. Trango Tower rises 1,340m in a single vertical sweep—the world's tallest near-vertical cliff face. Nearby Cathedral Spires and Uli Biaho form a granite gallery that draws elite rock climbers from every continent.
Shigar Fort & Balti Heritage
Before the trek, explore Skardu's Balti culture. The 17th-century Shigar Fort, restored as a Serena heritage hotel, blends Tibetan-influenced architecture with Karakoram views. Visit the 7th-century Manthal Buddha Rock, sample mamtu dumplings and butter tea in 'Little Tibet.'
