Venezuela
Six days from Boa Vista, Brazil, into Venezuela's Canaima National Park, a country of flat-topped tepuis, black-water rivers and waterfalls. A light aircraft flight over the Gran Sabana brings you to Canaima, where the first afternoon is spent on the lagoon and walking behind the curtain of water at Salto El Sapo. The next morning a curiara carries you four hours up the Carrao and Churún rivers beneath the cliffs of Auyán-tepui to a jungle camp facing Angel Falls. A forest walk of about an hour and a half leads to the foot of the falls, where the water drops 979 meters, the highest fall in the world. You sleep in hammocks by the river, return downstream to Canaima, and have a free day at the lagoon before heading back to Boa Vista. A moderate trip with long boat rides and simple lodging.
Angel Falls River Expedition
You are met at the airport in Boa Vista, the capital of Roraima, Brazil's northernmost state, and taken to your hotel.
The rest of the day is yours. Boa Vista is a relaxed city laid out in a fan shape along the Rio Branco, and the riverfront is the place to be in the late afternoon, when the heat eases and people come out to walk. Have an early dinner in town, since the drive to the Venezuelan border leaves at 5:00 the next morning. Bags you won't need in Canaima can stay at the hotel until you return.
An early departure at 5:00 a.m. for the Venezuelan border, about three hours north through open savanna. After border formalities, it is a short drive to Santa Elena de Uairén for the light aircraft flight to Canaima National Park, crossing the Gran Sabana and its scattered tepuis on the way. You are met by your local guide and settle into the lodge.
In the afternoon, a curiara, the long wooden canoe used on every river here, takes you across Canaima Lagoon to the waterfalls that pour into it, including Salto Hacha. From Anatoly Island it is a 20-minute walk to Salto El Sapo, where the path runs right behind the falling water. Expect to get soaked.
Meals L/D
An early start by curiara up the Carrao River and then into the Churún, with the cliffs of Auyán-tepui rising higher on both sides the farther you go. The boatmen read the rapids as they go, and in low water you may step out while they guide the curiara through. The trip to Ratoncito Island, across the river from the falls, takes about four hours.
In the afternoon, weather permitting, a walk of about an hour and a half through the forest leads to the viewpoint at the foot of Angel Falls, where the water drops 979 meters from the edge of the tepui. Back at camp, dinner is cooked over the fire, and the night is spent in hammocks with the falls across the river.
Meals B/L/D
If clouds hid the falls the afternoon before, the walk to the viewpoint is done this morning, when the top of the tepui is often clearest. Either way, early morning is the best time to see the falls from camp, before the clouds build over Auyán-tepui.
After breakfast, the curiara heads back downriver to Canaima, a quicker trip with the current behind you and another chance to take in the walls of the canyon. You arrive in time for a late lunch and a swim in the lagoon. Dinner and the night at the lodge.
Meals B/L/D
A free day in Canaima to spend as you like. Swim from the beaches of the lagoon, walk around Canaima village and its craft shops, or simply sit and watch the light change on the tepuis across the water.
If you want to see Angel Falls from above, a scenic flight can be arranged locally and paid on the spot, and the cost can be shared between travelers. Other optional excursions around the lagoon are also available at extra cost. Dinner and the night at the lodge.
Meals B/L/D
Free time after breakfast for a last look at the lagoon, then the flight back to Santa Elena de Uairén, arriving around midday. From there you cross the border back into Brazil and drive south across the savanna, reaching Boa Vista at about 4:30 p.m.
You are dropped at the hotel and then taken to the airport in time for your flight home. Onward flights from Boa Vista often leave late at night or the following day, so plan your connection with that in mind. An extra night in Boa Vista can be arranged if you need it.

What the days are like.
It is a moderate trip. The walk to the Angel Falls viewpoint takes about an hour and a half each way on a rocky, rooty forest trail, and the boat journeys are long. You should be comfortable on uneven ground and fine with a night in a hammock.
Basic but memorable. The camp on Ratoncito Island is open-sided, with hammocks and mosquito nets under a roof, dinner cooked at camp, and the falls in view across the river.
Partly. The transfers and the hotel in Boa Vista are arranged for your group, but in Canaima, boat trips and excursions are run by local operators and you may share them with other travelers. Every visit described here is included, though the order can change.
June to November, when the rains keep the rivers high and the falls at full strength. In the dry season, roughly January to April, the river can run low enough to make the boat journey slower or, in some years, impossible.
Not guaranteed, since cloud often covers the top of Auyán-tepui. That is why there are two chances to reach the viewpoint, the afternoon you arrive and the next morning.
Borders, documents and health.
In Boa Vista, Brazil. You fly into Boa Vista, and the trip crosses into Venezuela by road and returns the same way.
It depends on your nationality. You enter both Brazil and Venezuela, so check the entry rules of both before you book, and we will confirm what you need when you reserve.
Check with your doctor or a travel clinic before you go. Yellow fever vaccination is commonly recommended for this part of South America.
