The evening briefing dinner with your named Pamiri guide introduces the route, altitude protocols, and the AKDN thread that runs through the next 14 days. The cook vehicle’s resupply box is packed tonight for the full route. Meals: D

Day 2
Dushanbe to Kalai-Khumb
The expedition departs Dushanbe east on the M41, joining the Panj River as it forms the border with Afghanistan. Within hours, Afghan villages and mountain faces are visible across a river sometimes narrow enough to shout across. The camp cook pulls ahead to prepare a riverside lunch above the gorge, the first of many meals served at the landscape rather than at a table. A roadside chaikhana stop for tea with local traders breaks the afternoon drive. Arrive Kalai-Khumb by late afternoon. Meals: B / L / D
Your Accommodation
Karon Palace Hotel
The best-appointed property in Kalai-Khumb, with a rooftop terrace overlooking the mountains.

Day 3
Bartang Valley & Jizeu Gorge Walk
Drive to Rushan, then turn north into the Bartang Valley. The road is paved for 10km before deteriorating into a narrow track of loose rock and sand. Park at Basid and continue on foot: a 6km walk to Jizeu along the Bartang River through compressed canyon walls, crossing a swing bridge, arriving in a village with no road access and no electricity. After lunch in Jizeu, return through the gorge to the vehicles and drive north up the valley to Savnob, the most scenic village in the Bartang. Meals: B / L / D
Your Accommodation
Bartang Eco Homestay
Family homestay in Savnob, the most scenic village in the Bartang Valley.

Day 4
Savnob to Khorog
Early start to climb Savnob Fortress, a 19th-century citadel known as Tashkurgan, with sweeping valley panoramas and the legend of master craftsman Hasan who built it using only his left hand. Explore refuge caves above the village used for centuries by Bartangi families, and the ancient solar calendar: 15 stone geoglyphs ranging from 6 to 13 meters. Optional swim in the lake below the village. Drive back down the valley to Rushan, rejoin the M41, and continue to Khorog. PECTA office visit on arrival for a 45-minute structured meeting. Meals: B / L / D
Your Accommodation
Khorog Serena Inn

Day 5
Ishkashim Saturday Market & Wakhan Corridor
Early departure south from Khorog into the Wakhan Corridor. All EcoVoyager Pamir departures leave on a Monday, ensuring this day falls on a Saturday in Ishkashim when Afghan traders cross the border bridge for the weekly bazaar. Tajik and Afghan merchants trade side by side a few meters from the crossing point, one of the most unusual border experiences on earth. Continue south into the Wakhan, with Afghanistan sometimes just 20 meters across the Panj. First night at Akim Homestay in Yamchun, rated the best homestay in the entire Wakhan Valley. Meals: B / L / D
Your Accommodation

Day 6
Full Wakhan Exploration Day

The guide leads site interpretation covering the fort’s construction phases and its role on the Silk Road. Midday at Bibi Fatima Hot Springs, sacred thermal pools carved into a calcite grotto with separate male and female pools. Afternoon at Vrang for the early Buddhist-era stupa and cave monks’ cells visible in the cliff face. Drive east through Zong to quiet Hisor village, set in wheat fields. Meals: B / L / D

Day 7
Langar Petroglyphs & Zorkul Lake
Morning stop at Langar for the extraordinary petroglyph field: over 6,000 carvings spanning the Bronze Age to the medieval Silk Road, depicting ibex, Marco Polo sheep, and hunting scenes. The cook lays out lunch at the petroglyph site. The group then enters the Zorkul Nature Reserve on a special permit arranged through PECTA. Zorkul Lake at 4,125m sits directly on the Afghan border, a vast wilderness lake with almost no human presence. A local ranger accompanies the group to check an active snow leopard camera trap line. Camp cook prepares dinner at the lake. Meals: B / L / D

Day 8
Zorkul Lake to Alichur via Khargush Pass
Break camp at Zorkul as dawn light shifts across the lake. Drive north along the Pamir River, the same river that becomes the Amu Darya of Central Asia, to Khargush Pass at 4,344m where the Wakhan ends. The landscape transformation here is one of the expedition’s defining moments: the intimate canyon world of the Wakhan abruptly opens into the vast, flat, treeless Eastern Pamir plateau. Detour west to Yashilkul Lake where prehistoric stone circles and Scythian burial mounds sit on the north shore. Brief stop at Bulunkul, then the Ak Balyk sacred spring before arriving at the Alichur yurt camp. Meals: B / L / D
Your Accommodation
Yurt Camp, Alichur

Day 9
Alichur Marco Polo Sheep Conservancy Day
A full day with the Burgut community conservancy, the only conservation-based Marco Polo sheep watching program in the Eastern Pamirs. Conservancy rangers lead a morning excursion into the gorges above the plateau where herds of 20 to 50 animals are reliably observed in July and August. This is a structured wildlife program, not a speculative encounter. Guest fees contribute directly to anti-poaching ranger salaries. Afternoon on the Alichur plateau on foot or horseback, with yak herder encampments scattered across the plain and marmots at every boulder. Evening dinner with rangers. Meals: B / L / D
Your Accommodation
Yurt Camp, Alichur
Second night at the Alichur yurt camp at 3,900m, after a full day with conservancy rangers.

Day 10
Alichur to Murghab
A deliberately short driving day after nine days of demanding terrain. Short morning drive east along the M41 to Murghab, the highest town in the former Soviet Union at 3,650m. Arrive late morning with the rest of the day free. The container bazaar is the town’s main attraction: shipping containers repurposed as shops selling Kyrgyz textiles, Chinese electronics, and dried fruit at the roof of the world. Wander, sit in a teahouse, watch trucks arrive from China, do laundry. Evening family dinner at Erali Guesthouse with hosts Sherali and Apal. Meals: B / D
Your Accommodation

Day 11
Murghab: Pshart Valley & Horseback Riding
Full day from Murghab into the Pshart Valley, one of the most beautiful and least-visited corners of the Eastern Pamir. The valley features wildflower meadows, mineral-coloured rock formations, and nomadic Kyrgyz yak herder camps that arrive here for the summer months. The ruins of a Soviet-era astronomical observatory sit at the head of the valley at 4,000m with views toward China. The horseback ride with a herder family is the day’s centrepiece, crossing the plateau with yaks grazing alongside. Return to Murghab for a second night at Erali Guesthouse. Meals: B / L / D

Optional camel trekking on the plateau. Return to the M41 and climb to Ak-Baital Pass at 4,655m, the highest point on any highway in the former Soviet Union. The cook vehicle prepares breakfast at the summit. Descend to Karakul Lake at 3,960m. Lakeshore dinner as the temperature drops and the stars appear, with the portable telescope and Pamiri constellation mythology from the guide. Meals: B / L / D

The descent through the Alai Valley is dramatic, the road dropping over a kilometer in elevation as the Trans-Alay Range fills the windshield. Lunch stop in Sary Tash, a remote Kyrgyz village at the base of the mountains, for a final panoramic view of the peaks guests have spent two weeks among. Continue down to Osh. Check in to Jannat Resort. Hot showers. A pool. Farewell dinner. Meals: B / L / D

Suleiman Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as a Silk Road pilgrimage site for over 3,000 years, rises directly above the city and rewards an early visit before the heat builds. The Osh Bazaar, one of Central Asia’s great markets, is best explored in the morning. Osh connects to Bishkek, Istanbul, and Moscow with onward connections worldwide. Meals: B

We recommend booking 6-12 months in advance, especially for remote destinations like Greenland or Madagascar. This allows time for permit processing, securing the best local guides, and ensuring accommodation availability in these pristine, limited-access locations.
Each adventure includes expert local guides, unique accommodations, all transportation within the destination, most meals featuring local cuisine, and exclusive access to experiences unavailable to mass tourism. International flights and personal travel insurance are typically separate.
We design adventures for various fitness levels and always discuss physical requirements during planning. Many of our destinations offer different activity intensities, and we can customize experiences to match your capabilities while still providing authentic wilderness encounters.
We partner exclusively with local operators who share our conservation values, ensure tourism revenue supports local communities, limit group sizes to minimize environmental impact, and contribute directly to conservation projects in each destination we visit.
We understand plans can change. Our cancellation policy varies by destination and timing, but we always work to minimize fees and maximize flexibility. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance and will provide guidance on the best policies for adventure travel.
While we specialize in our core destinations, we can create custom adventures to other remote, wild places that align with our mission of authentic, sustainable travel. Contact us to discuss your dream destination and we'll explore possibilities.
We focus exclusively on authentic, off-the-beaten-path destinations that most travelers never reach. Our deep partnerships with local communities, commitment to conservation, and rejection of mass tourism create truly transformative experiences that benefit both travelers and destinations.
Safety is our top priority. Our local partners are extensively vetted and trained in wilderness safety and emergency protocols. We provide comprehensive safety briefings, maintain communication equipment, and have established emergency evacuation procedures for all our remote destinations.
