Karakul Lake

A Meteorite-Crater Lake in the Eastern Pamir

Karakul Lake fills a 52-kilometer meteorite impact crater at 3,960 meters on the Eastern Pamir plateau. This 380 square kilometer body of saline water sits inside one of the largest confirmed impact structures in Central Asia, its turquoise surface reflecting peaks that rise above 7,000 meters. A Ramsar wetland within a UNESCO World Heritage national park, the lake supports breeding bar-headed geese, endangered saker falcons, and an endemic fish found nowhere else. The Kyrgyz village on its eastern shore offers homestays at the roof of the world.

A Meteorite Crater Filled with Water

Karakul Lake fills the center of a confirmed meteorite impact crater spanning 52 kilometers across the Eastern Pamir plateau. The asteroid struck between 5 and 25 million years ago, leaving a complex crater with a central uplift that now forms a peninsula and island dividing the lake into two basins. The western basin plunges to 236 meters, while the shallow eastern basin reaches only 22 meters. Shocked quartz and shatter cones confirmed the impact origin.

The lake covers 380 square kilometers at 3,960 meters elevation, making it one of the highest large lakes on Earth. It is endorheic with no outflow, fed by three small glacial streams. Evaporation has concentrated minerals over millennia, producing bitter, saline water and salt-crusted shorelines. The surface shifts from deep turquoise under calm skies to near-black during the fierce storms that sweep across the plateau without warning.

Best Time to Visit Karakul Lake

When to visit Karakul on the Pamir Highway

Summer
July – August
32–55°F Low (5–15mm)
Peak
The only reliable travel window for Karakul. Daytime highs reach 15 to 16 degrees with nights dropping near freezing. All roads are passable and Kyrgyz families occupy summer yurt camps. The lake is free of ice and displays vivid turquoise colors. Book vehicles and homestays well in advance.
Spring
June – September
25–50°F Low (5–20mm)
Shoulder
June brings melting ice on the lake and passes may still carry snow. September sees declining temperatures with frost common at night. Both months offer quieter conditions and fewer travelers. The Kyzyl-Art border can be unpredictable in early June. Warm sleeping gear is essential.
Winter
October – May
-4–25°F Low (5–30mm snow)
Offseason
Temperatures regularly drop below minus 35 degrees with wind. The lake freezes from mid-October with ice reaching one meter thick. Ak-Baital Pass can close for weeks. No tourism infrastructure operates and the village is largely cut off from supply lines. Not suitable for general travel.
