Things to Do in Fedchenko Glacier
Starting points for your perfect trip
The Expedition Trek
Cross crevassed glaciers, ford icy rivers, and climb 5,000-meter passes over 14 days of wilderness trekking to reach a glacier no trail system can reach. This is one of Earth's last truly remote expedition objectives.
Seven-Thousand-Meter Views
From the glacier surface, four peaks above 7,000 meters dominate the skyline—including Ismoil Somoni, Tajikistan's highest summit. The view down 77 kilometers of moraine-striped ice is unlike anything else on the planet.
The Gorbunov Station
Explore an abandoned Soviet meteorological outpost built on the glacier in 1933 and left frozen in time since the 1990s. Instruments, a radio, and a library remain exactly as they were left, 4,169 meters above sea level.
Pamir Wildlife
The ranges flanking Fedchenko harbor snow leopards, Siberian ibex, Himalayan brown bears, golden eagles, and lammergeiers. With zero other visitors, the Pamir wilderness around the glacier is one of Central Asia's last intact ecosystems.

Stories from Fedchenko Glacier
77 Kilometers of Ice in the Pamir
Fedchenko Glacier stretches 77 kilometers through the Yazgulem Range of Tajikistan’s Pamir Mountains—the longest glacier on Earth outside the polar regions. Up to 3.1 kilometers wide and reaching a maximum ice thickness of approximately 1,000 meters, it holds an estimated 144 cubic kilometers of freshwater across roughly 700 square kilometers. The glacier originates at 6,200 meters on the flanks of Independence Peak and flows northward to a debris-covered terminus at 2,909 meters. Some 45 tributary glaciers feed the main trunk, their confluences marked by striking reddish-brown medial moraines visible from space.
The glacier is flanked by Ismoil Somoni Peak (7,495 m), Tajikistan’s highest mountain, and three other peaks exceeding 7,000 meters. Its meltwater feeds the Muksu and Vakhsh rivers before reaching the Amu Darya—the lifeline of Central Asia. Entirely within Tajik National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013, Fedchenko exists in one of the most remote and spectacular mountain landscapes on the planet.

Muksu Valley Approach
Muksu Valley Approach
Approach from the north via Poy Mazar in the Muksu Valley by Soviet GAZ-66 truck, then ascend the RGS Glacier to enter Fedchenko from its lower end. More technically demanding than the Bartang route. Used by the 2014 ski traverse team.
Helicopter Access
Helicopter Access
Military Mi-8 helicopters have flown scientific teams from Dushanbe to the Gorbunov Station at 4,200 meters, bypassing weeks of trekking. Requires advance coordination through a Dushanbe-based operator and depends on military aircraft availability.
