Location Overview

Fedchenko Glacier

Fedchenko, Tajikistan

Fedchenko Glacier is the longest glacier on Earth outside the polar regions—a 77-kilometer river of ice deep in Tajikistan's Pamir Mountains. Ringed by four peaks above 7,000 meters including Ismoil Somoni, the country's highest summit, it holds an estimated 144 cubic kilometers of freshwater and feeds the rivers that sustain Central Asia. There are no trails, no huts, and no other visitors. Reaching it requires a 20-day expedition across crevassed glaciers and 5,000-meter passes. The reward is one of the last truly untouched landscapes on the planet.

Best Time to Visit Fedchenko Glacier

Peak Season
August - September
18–52°F Very Low (0–15mm)
Peak
The optimal window. River crossings in the approach valleys are at annual low levels, glacier surfaces are most navigable, and weather windows are most reliable. Pamir Trips runs its standard 20-day expedition departing September. Book a full year in advance—group sizes are strictly limited to 3 to 6 people per expedition.
Off Season
Oct to May
−4–32°F Variable
Offseason
October brings early snowfall and unstable weather at altitude. By November, the Bartang road closes and passes become avalanche terrain. The glacier is completely inaccessible November through April. May carries extreme avalanche risk on all approach routes and is unsuitable for standard expeditions.

Getting to Fedchenko Glacier

Choose your route. Every option arrives at the same destination.

Bartang Valley Trek

20-day expedition
Journey Time
$3,600 USD guided
Approximate Cost
Drive 2 days from Dushanbe through Kalai-Khumb and Rushan to Pasor village in the Bartang Valley, then trek 8 to 14 days across glaciers and 5,000-meter passes to reach the glacier surface. The standard route for all guided expeditions.
Insider Tip
Book with Pamir Trips in Khorog—the most experienced Fedchenko operator. Allow schedule flexibility: the Bartang road closes after heavy rain. September is optimal; August viable but river crossings are more dangerous.

Muksu Valley Approach

20-day expedition
Journey Time
$3,600 USD guided
Approximate Cost
Approach from the north via Poy Mazar in the Muksu Valley by Soviet GAZ-66 truck, then ascend the RGS Glacier to enter Fedchenko from its lower end. More technically demanding than the Bartang route. Used by the 2014 ski traverse team.
Insider Tip
Negotiate GAZ-66 truck rental in advance in Dushanbe. Stronger glacier travel skills are required for this approach than for the Bartang route. Combining both approaches creates the most complete Fedchenko traverse possible.

Helicopter Access

1-day flight
Journey Time
Price on application
Approximate Cost
Military Mi-8 helicopters have flown scientific teams from Dushanbe to the Gorbunov Station at 4,200 meters, bypassing weeks of trekking. Requires advance coordination through a Dushanbe-based operator and depends on military aircraft availability.
Insider Tip
Helicopter access is expensive, weather-dependent, and delayed by military priorities. No commercial service exists. Pamir Trips and TopAsia Travel have arranged flights for scientific teams. Only suitable for acclimatized mountaineers.
