Things to Do in Fann Mountains
Starting points for your perfect trip
Kulikalon to Alauddin Trek
Walk the classic loop from Artuch over the Laudan and Alauddin passes, linking the Kulikalon basin to the Alauddin Lakes beneath a wall of 5,000-meter peaks. Three to four days of moderate trekking with lakeside camps and herder pastures.
Chimtarga Pass Crossing
Cross the highest trekking pass in the range at 4,750 meters, the high point of a multi-day traverse from the Alauddin Lakes down through the Zindon Gorge to Big Allo. It demands acclimatization and porters, as donkeys cannot cross.
Iskanderkul and Fann Niagara
Visit Iskanderkul, the largest lake in the Fanns at 2,195 meters and named for Alexander the Great, then walk to the Fann Niagara waterfall on its outflow. Reachable by 4x4 as a day trip or as a trek finish.
Seven Lakes (Haft Kul)
Follow the Shing valley past seven dammed lakes that shift from deep jade to vivid turquoise as they climb, staying in village homestays among the Tajik shepherd communities of the western Fanns.

Turquoise Lakes Beneath 5,000m Peaks
A Closer Look at Fann Mountains
Forty Lakes Beneath Nine Summits
The Fann Mountains occupy the junction where the Zarafshan Range meets the Hissar Range in Sughd Province, forming a compact massif of roughly 650 square kilometers. Nine peaks exceed 5,000 meters, crowned by Chimtarga at 5,489 meters. Scores of glaciers feed approximately 40 lakes whose colors range from emerald to deep turquoise, created by glacial flour and mineral content suspended in filtered meltwater. The range sits on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
The principal lake basins draw most visitors. Kulikalon at 2,800 meters holds a cluster of lakes in a vast glacial cirque ringed by juniper forest. The Alauddin Lakes at 2,700 to 2,850 meters reflect six five-thousanders in water so pure it contains no visible particles. Big Allo at 3,150 meters was born from a 1912 earthquake. Iskanderkul at 2,195 meters is the largest at 3.4 square kilometers, named for Alexander the Great.
Soviet Alpinism and Sogdian Roots
The Fann Mountains were a cornerstone of Soviet alpinism, with the Artuch base camp long the primary staging point for expeditions. Climbers from across the Eastern Bloc trained on walls graded from 1A to 6A in the Russian system. The massive faces of Bodkhona and Chapdara still host Russia’s Annual Technical Rock Climbing Championship. The infrastructure collapsed after the Soviet Union dissolved and Tajikistan’s civil war, reopening to international visitors after the civil war.
Ancient Penjikent, just 80 kilometers from the trailheads, was a major Sogdian city destroyed by Arab forces in 722 CE. Excavations spanning over 75 seasons have earned it the title of Central Asia’s Pompeii, yielding extraordinary wall murals now housed in the Hermitage Museum. Nearby Sarazm, dating to 3500 BC, became Tajikistan’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. The adjacent Yagnob Valley shelters the last speakers of a Sogdian descended language.
Pamir-Alay Trekking, Without the Permits
The Fann Mountains are part of the Pamir-Alay, the mountain system west of the high Pamirs, and that distinction matters for travelers. Unlike the Pamir Highway and the GBAO region, the Fanns require no special permit, only a standard Tajik visa or visa-free entry, and they sit a few hours from Samarkand, so they pair naturally with an Uzbekistan Silk Road trip. This is mainstream Sunni Tajik country, with shepherd families grazing the high basins through the summer, distinct from the Ismaili Pamiri culture further east.
Trekking is the reason to come. The classic three to four day loop links the Kulikalon and Alauddin lake basins over passes around 3,800 meters, while longer traverses cross the 4,750-meter Chimtarga Pass to Big Allo and on to Iskanderkul or the Seven Lakes. The season runs from late June to mid-September, with warm days, cold nights, and snow lingering on the highest passes into early summer. Siberian ibex and marmots are common sights; snow leopards are present but very rarely seen.
