In 2023, a peer-reviewed whole-genome study analyzing 684,081 single nucleotide polymorphisms confirmed that the Gobi bear and its close relative, the Himalayan brown bear, form the most ancient of those five lineages. The Mazaalai did not branch off from some recent common ancestor. It diverged before every other brown bear group on Earth existed. That finding does something that decades of conservation arguments have not quite managed: it reframes the animal entirely. The Mazaalai is not a subspecies teetering at the edge of a local extinction. It is an evolutionary lineage older than all other brown bear populations, and losing it would erase a genetic chapter that cannot be recovered.

The subspecies designation, Ursus arctos gobiensis, is upheld by Mongolian law and recognized by all major conservation bodies. The 2023 genome data now places hard scientific weight behind that designation, effectively settling the question of whether the Mazaalai is genetically distinct enough to warrant its own protection. It is. By a considerable margin.

A Body Built for Extremes: How the Mazaalai Survives Where No Other Bear Can

Adult male Mazaalai weigh between 96 and 138 kilograms, making them the smallest brown bear subspecies in the region. That size is not a deficiency. It is the result of tens of thousands of years of adaptation to a place where calories are genuinely scarce. A healthy large male captured in spring 2023 weighed 135 kilograms. By most brown bear standards, that is a lean animal. By Gobi standards, it is a well-fed one.

The diet reflects the habitat with precision. Mazaalai eat the rhizomes of wild rhubarb (Rheum nanum), berries of nitre bush (Nitraria spp.), grass shoots from common reed (Phragmites), wild onion (Allium spp.), and Ephedra. Animal matter, mostly rodents, makes up roughly one percent of total intake. This is a bear that has made peace with a plant-based existence in a place where plants are sparse, seasonal, and directly dependent on water points that may be 70 to 100 kilometers apart.

Male home ranges run to approximately 2,400 square kilometers. Males travel between the three main oasis complexes, Atas Bogd Mountain, Shar Khuls Oasis, and Tsagaan Bogd Mountain, to mate with multiple females. These distances dwarf the ranges of most brown bear populations on Earth. The Mazaalai does not roam because it wants to. It roams because the resources it needs are that far apart.

Dr. Harry Reynolds, lead researcher of the Gobi Bear Project, put it plainly: “They’re the only bear of any kind that dwells exclusively in desert habitat. By adaptation and learning, they’ve found a way to live in one of the most extreme environments on the planet.”

Hunting has been prohibited by Mongolian law since 1953. The Mazaalai is listed in the Red Book of Mongolia and under Annex I of CITES. The legal protections are real. The pressures on the bear are also real, and they are not addressed by prohibitions alone.

The Numbers Behind the Crisis: Population, Sex Ratio, and What They Mean

The population figures for the Mazaalai require careful reading, because the range is wide and the reason for that width matters.

Long-term genetic monitoring using DNA capture-recapture methods estimates 31 individuals remain in the wild, with a 95 percent confidence interval of 28 to 38. A more recent joint study, running from 2018 to 2024, reported a figure of 52 individuals using traditional survey approaches. That discrepancy does not represent a rebound. It reflects different methodologies producing different counts of the same small population. Population estimates for this species have ranged from 17 to 52 across studies and methods. The honest read is that somewhere between 31 and 52 Mazaalai exist in the wild, and that the real number is almost certainly closer to the lower end of that range when genetic methods are applied.

More worrying than the raw count is the sex ratio. The population skews heavily toward males, which directly constrains reproduction. Fewer breeding females means fewer cubs. A skewed ratio also reduces allelic diversity in an already tiny gene pool, compounding the genetic vulnerability that the 2023 genome study brought into focus.

No Mazaalai exist in captivity anywhere on Earth. There is no insurance population. If the wild population fails, there is no backup.

The entire species is now confined to roughly 23,600 square kilometers within the Great Gobi A Strictly Protected Area, the portion close enough to water sources to support survival. Before the 1970s, Gobi bear distribution in southwestern Mongolia extended beyond the GGSPA to include Edriin Ridge, the Eej Khayrkhan Nature Reserve, and portions of Gurvan Saykhan National Park, areas from which the bear has since been extirpated. The contraction of range over the past half-century is as significant a data point as the population count itself.

Three Threats Converging on the Same Scarce Water

The Mazaalai’s situation is not the product of a single cause. Three distinct pressures have converged on the same bottleneck: water, and the vegetation it supports.

Climate change is reshaping the base of the food supply. Average annual rainfall in the GGSPA region fell from approximately 100 millimeters to 50 millimeters during a 14-year drought between 1993 and 2007, a period that likely affected bear body condition and reproductive success. A separate climate modeling study found that precipitation-associated variables have the strongest effect on the distribution of the three main dietary plants: Ephedra, nitre bush, and wild rhubarb. That study projects continued changes in habitat suitability for those plants through 2041 to 2080 under various scenarios. Bears that cannot access enough of these plants before hibernation enter winter in poor condition, and females in poor condition produce fewer viable cubs.

Illegal small-scale mining inside the GGSPA adds a more immediate problem. Miners on motorcycles camp near the scarce water points that bears depend on, blocking access to a resource with no substitute in this terrain. The economic pressure driving this activity is straightforward: Mongolia’s annual per capita income sits at roughly US$4,000, and unregulated gold and mineral extraction offers wages that formal employment often does not.

Overgrazing in the buffer zone compounds both of the above. An estimated one million domestic animals, predominantly goats and sheep with some camels, graze the GGSPA buffer zone annually. That pressure reduces the abundance of the plant foods bears need to build fat reserves before hibernation. It is not that herders are acting irrationally. It is that the scale of grazing has grown beyond what the vegetation can absorb without affecting the bears upstream.

All three threats share a common mechanism: they reduce the productivity of a landscape that was already operating at the edge of what a large omnivore can survive on. There is no slack in this system.

Mongolia's Political Commitment: From National Treasure to National Pride Animal

Conservation science tells you what is happening. Political will determines whether anything is done about it. In the case of the Mazaalai, Mongolia’s political commitment has reached a level rarely seen for any bear species anywhere.

In 2013, the President declared the Year of the Gobi Bear, the first time any nation had made such a decree for any bear. In 2022, President Khürelsükh named Mazaalai conservation one of his administration’s top three environmental priorities. In 2023, a government resolution formally designated the Mazaalai a Mongolian national pride animal, with funding allocated to protection, monitoring, and public awareness.

That progression matters. A presidential proclamation in 2013 is a statement. A top-three environmental priority in 2022 is a budget commitment. A formal legislative designation in 2023 with funding attached is policy. The Mazaalai has moved through all three stages within a decade, which is an unusual trajectory in wildlife conservation.

The 2018 to 2024 China-Mongolia conservation project, the first major foreign-funded initiative providing technical assistance for wildlife conservation in the GGSPA, added international weight to that domestic commitment. The Gobi Bear Project has been fitting GPS satellite radio collars since the program began, tracking 20 individuals in total, 15 males and 5 females. A supplemental feeding program has been in place since 1985, providing pellets containing wheat, corn, carrots, and turnips at feeders near selected waterholes throughout the GGSPA, particularly in spring and autumn. These are not dramatic interventions. They are the careful, sustained kind that small-population conservation requires.

What distinguishes the Mazaalai situation from most bear conservation efforts globally is the near-complete absence of human-bear conflict. Livestock attacks are virtually unheard of. The bear eats plants, the desert is sparsely populated, and there are no garbage dumps to raid. The social environment for conservation is, by the standards of the field, unusually cooperative. That does not make the biological problem easier. But it removes one of the most common obstacles to saving a large carnivore.

Be direct about one thing: you will not see a Mazaalai. Fewer than 52 animals across more than 46,000 square kilometers of closed habitat makes a sighting effectively impossible. Researchers complete entire expeditions without one. Any itinerary that implies otherwise is not being honest with you.

Zone A of the GGSPA is not open to general tourism. Entering it requires a special permit and a ranger escort, and any operation doing so works under conservation or research auspices, not standard travel arrangements. That constraint is itself a form of information: the place is serious, and the people who work there treat it that way.
