Gobi Desert

Gobi Desert, Mongolia

Stretching across southern Mongolia lies the Gobi—Asia's largest desert and one of the world's most misunderstood landscapes. This is no endless sea of sand but a world of gravel plains, hidden oases, and mountains rising from prehistoric seabeds. Here, paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first dinosaur eggs in 1922, and today the Flaming Cliffs still glow orange at sunset. Bactrian camels cross singing dunes that hum in the wind, while somewhere in the western reaches, fewer than 40 Gobi bears—the world's only desert-dwelling bears—survive against all odds.

Best Time to Visit Gobi Desert

Desert Summer
June – September
68–82°F Low (15–37mm)
Peak
The Gobi's optimal travel window. All ger camps operational with daily flights to Dalanzadgad. Warm days ideal for dune treks, fossil sites, and nomadic family visits. Naadam Festival (July 11–13) adds cultural richness. Brief afternoon showers in July–August rarely disrupt plans. Book July–August well in advance.
Desert Spring
April – May
56–70°F Very Low (5–12mm)
Shoulder
Warming days but frequent dust and sandstorms sweep the desert, especially in April. Ger camps begin opening late May with limited availability. Few tourists and lower prices reward flexible travelers. May offers pleasant daytime warmth while April nights still drop below freezing.
Desert Winter
October – March
18–54°F Minimal (1–5mm, snow)
Offseason
Ger camps close by early October and reopen late May. Temperatures drop below 0°F by December with extremes reaching −30°F. Roads become impassable and flights reduce significantly. The Thousand Camel Festival (February–March) draws hardy visitors, but this is specialist expedition territory requiring full winter equipment.

Getting to Gobi Desert

Choose your route. Every option arrives at the same destination.

Fly to Dalanzadgad

1.5 hours flight
Journey Time
From $150-200 USD one-way
Approximate Cost
Daily flights operate from Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad Airport, the gateway to the Gobi's main attractions. Hunnu Air and Aero Mongolia serve this route during peak season (May-October), with reduced frequency in winter months.
Insider Tip
Book domestic flights well in advance for July-August travel. Morning flights offer better views of the steppe. Dalanzadgad Airport is small—confirm luggage limits with your airline. Flight schedules can change; build flexibility into your itinerary.

Overland from Ulaanbaatar

7-9 hours by road
Journey Time
From $300-400 USD per vehicle
Approximate Cost
The overland route covers 540 kilometers, mostly on paved roads until the final stretch. The journey itself is an adventure, crossing the transition zone from steppe to semi-desert with opportunities to stop at Baga Gazriin Chuluu rock formations.
Insider Tip
Break the drive with an overnight at Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa) for a more comfortable journey. Bring motion sickness medication—roads can be rough. Stock up on snacks and water in Ulaanbaatar. This option allows seeing more of the countryside.

Internal Gobi Transfers

3-6 hours between sites
Journey Time
Included in tour packages
Approximate Cost
Within the Gobi, attractions are spread across vast distances—Dalanzadgad to Khongoryn Els is 180 kilometers, to Bayanzag is 110 kilometers. Travel is by 4x4 vehicle over unpaved tracks that require experienced local drivers who know the unmarked routes.
Insider Tip
Distances in the Gobi are deceptive—a site 100 kilometers away can take 3-4 hours to reach. Carry plenty of water. Expect bumpy, dusty rides—bring a bandana or dust mask. Desert driving is an adventure in itself, with wildlife sightings along the way.
