Things to Do in Osh
Starting points for your perfect trip
Sulaiman-Too Sacred Mountain
Ascend Kyrgyzstan’s only UNESCO site, sacred for at least 1,500 years. Explore caves with petroglyphs from 1500 BCE, visit the mosque where Mughal founder Babur performed his 40-day chilla retreat, and discover 17 pilgrimage sites where believers seek blessings for fertility and healing.
Pamir Highway Expedition
Begin the legendary M41 from Osh—one of the world’s highest highways. Cross the 3,615-meter Taldyk Pass into the Alay Valley, continue to Kyzyl-Art Pass at 4,250 meters at the Tajik border, and journey onward through Earth’s most spectacular high-altitude mountain terrain.
Alay Valley & Lenin Peak Base Camp
Trek the Pamir-Alay Mountains to Lenin Peak base camp at Achik-Tash, beneath one of the world’s most accessible 7,000-meter summits. Stay in yurt camps at Tulpar-Kol Lake, cross passes including Jiptick at 4,185 meters, and witness glaciers descending from Central Asia’s highest peaks.
Osh Bazaar & Culinary Immersion
Explore one of Central Asia’s oldest bazaars, occupying the same Ak-Buura River site for over 2,000 years. Learn to prepare Osh-style plov with devzira rice from Uzgen, sample tandoor-baked samsa, and discover where Kyrgyz and Uzbek culinary traditions have merged over centuries.
Uzgen Karakhanid Heritage Excursion
Journey 56 kilometers northeast to Uzgen, where an 11th-century Karakhanid minaret and three ornate mausolea survive from the dynasty that brought Islam to the Fergana Valley. The 27-meter tower is among the oldest standing structures in Kyrgyzstan, with intricate terracotta brickwork.
Sunday Livestock Market
Join traders from across the Fergana Valley at Osh’s weekly livestock market, where Kyrgyz herders in kalpak hats and Uzbek farmers trade horses, sheep, and cattle amid animated negotiation. This centuries-old tradition peaks in autumn as families prepare herds for winter.

Stories from Osh
Three Thousand Years of Trade
Osh claims a continuous history stretching back 3,000 years—making it not only Kyrgyzstan’s oldest city but one of the most ancient settlements in all of Central Asia. Archaeological evidence from the slopes of Sulaiman-Too dates to the Bronze Age, while written records first mention the city in the 9th century as a thriving silk production center along the great trading routes connecting China to the Mediterranean world. The Chinese explorer Zhang Qian passed through this region as early as 138 BCE on his historic journey that opened the Silk Road.
What makes Osh extraordinary is how that trading tradition endures. The Jayma Bazaar—a massive marketplace stretching along the Ak-Buura River—has occupied essentially the same site for over two millennia, though it was relocated to a modern facility in 2025. Originally three separate markets that merged into one sprawling commercial center, the bazaar once served caravans heading east toward Kashgar or west toward Samarkand. Today, Uzbek traders in embroidered tebeteikas mingle with Kyrgyz herders in white kalpak hats, selling everything from golden apricots to handwoven carpets to horse meat sausages—a living continuation of Central Asia’s ancient commercial culture.
