Travel to Khevsureti

Khevsureti occupies 1,050 square kilometers of some of Georgia’s most dramatic mountain terrain, straddling both sides of the Greater Caucasus watershed—technically placing it on the boundary between Europe and Asia. For centuries, this remote region served as Georgia’s northern shield against invaders from the North Caucasus. The Khevsurs built their villages not as collections of houses but as unified fortifications, with tower-dwellings connected by rooftop passages and hidden corridors that allowed entire communities to move defensively as one.

Shatili, the region’s iconic fortress-village at 1,400 meters in the Arghuni Gorge, exemplifies this architecture. Its 60 towers cluster together into what appears to be a single massive castle growing from the mountainside. The complex developed over centuries, primarily during the 12th-18th centuries, and remains on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List. Twelve kilometers beyond, the ghost fortress of Mutso clings to a near-vertical cliff at 1,880 meters—its 30 fortified dwellings and four combat towers recently restored with Europa Nostra Award-winning conservation work.

The Khevsurs earned a legendary reputation as fierce warriors who defended Georgia’s mountain frontier. Georgian kings regarded them as elite fighters and reliable guardians of the northern border, exempting them from taxes in exchange for this service. Into the early 20th century, Khevsur men still wore chainmail armor and carried cross-adorned broadswords—earning them the romantic (though debunked) legend of being descendants of lost Crusaders. Their martial traditions survive today in the dramatic Khevsuruli warrior dance, a UNESCO-recognized intangible heritage.

Khevsur religion represents one of Georgia’s most fascinating cultural survivals—a unique fusion of Orthodox Christianity with pre-Christian beliefs that persisted into the 20th century. Sacred shrines called jvari (‘cross’), khati (‘icon’), or salotsavi (‘sanctuary’) served both as places of worship and community councils where matters of war and peace were decided. Animal sacrifices, sacred groves, and ritual practices continued even through Soviet anti-religious campaigns. Today, visitors can still encounter this living tradition at shrines throughout the region.

Beyond the fortress villages, Khevsureti offers some of Georgia’s most spectacular and least-visited mountain landscapes. The Abudelauri Lakes—known as the ‘Colorful Lakes’—sit at 2,600 meters beneath the dramatic Chaukhi Massif. Three separate lakes each display a different color: Blue Lake (2,580m) and Green Lake (2,620m) get their hues from glacial sediments reflecting sunlight, while White Lake (2,840m) gains its milky appearance from carbonates dissolving as the water warms. The 7-kilometer hike from Roshka village takes 2-3 hours each way.

For serious trekkers, Khevsureti connects to both Kazbegi and Tusheti via challenging multi-day routes crossing high mountain passes. The Khakhabo Gorge offers wild camping and river crossings through virtually untouched wilderness. The 107,000-hectare Pshav-Khevsureti National Park protects this landscape, home to brown bears, wolves, lynx, and chamois. With trails marked by Polish trekkers and guesthouses in Shatili offering authentic highland hospitality, Khevsureti rewards adventurous travelers willing to venture beyond Georgia’s more accessible destinations.
