This 11-day expedition moves through the most remote corridor in Kyrgyzstan’s central mountains: Son-Kul Lake at 3,016m, the cliff-walled Kel-Suu canyon lake on the Chinese border, a night at Chatyr-Kul at 3,530m on the Chinese border plateau, and a one-way horseback traverse over Panda Pass at 4,104m into Tash-Rabat, the most intact Silk Road caravanserai in Central Asia. The route crosses three active border zones requiring permits, covers terrain no shared shuttle can access, and includes experiences no other operator on this route currently offers.

Route Overview 11 Days · Kyrgyzstan

Day 1
Arrival in Bishkek
Transfer from Manas Airport to the Orion Hotel, Bishkek's finest address on Erkindik Boulevard. Locally-owned boutique property, spa with pool, Symphony restaurant, a short walk from Ala-Too Square. The afternoon is yours to explore or rest. At 6pm the group gathers for a welcome dinner and expedition briefing. By the time dinner is done, you know every day of the route ahead: the altitude profile, the three border permit zones, the families hosting you in the remote camps, and what awaits on Day 8 when you mount at the Chatyr-Kul lakeshore and ride toward Panda Pass. Meals: D

Day 2
Bishkek to Son-Kul via Kochkor
Depart Bishkek at 9am south through the Boom Gorge and Chuy Valley. First stop: the women's shyrdak felt cooperative in Kochkor, where felt rugs are hand-stitched using dyed sheep wool. A working artisan cooperative, not a tourist demonstration. After lunch, the road climbs through Kalmak-Ashu Pass at 3,447m. The landscape shifts within minutes from forested gorge to wide alpine steppe. Arrive at Yurt Camp Azamat on Son-Kul's south shore in the mid-afternoon, run by Venera and her family, consistently the highest-reviewed camp on the lake. Approximately 250km, 6-7 hours including stops. Meals: B / L / D
Your Accommodation
Yurt Camp Azamat

Day 3
Son-Kul: Full Day on the Jailoo
A full day at 3,016m with no vehicle and no schedule. Son-Kul rewards stillness: the plateau is vast, the sky is active, and the nomadic life across the surrounding jailoo is not staged. Morning options include a ridgeline hike above camp with panoramic views of the lake, a lakeshore horseback ride arranged through the camp, or a walk toward the nomadic yurt clusters and horse herds to the east. Temperatures drop sharply after dark even in August. At this altitude and distance from any light source, the Milky Way is fully visible on a clear night. Meals: B / L / D

Day 4
Son-Kul to Naryn via Dolon Pass and the Eki-Naryn Canyon
Descend from the Son-Kul plateau north through the Kalmak-Ashu gorge to Kochkor, then south. The Dolon Pass at 3,030m opens wide: a broad alpine plateau with unobstructed views across multiple ridgelines in every direction. Stop for 20-30 minutes. South of the pass the road descends into the Eki-Naryn Canyon, where the Naryn River has cut sheer walls directly to the water below. Stop at a viewpoint above the river. Arrive Naryn by mid-afternoon. Collect border zone permits at the CBT Naryn office. The last city with reliable services before six days in the remote zone. Approximately 230km, 5-6 hours including stops. Meals: B / L / D
Your Accommodation
Naryn Guest House
Comfortable guest house in central Naryn with breakfast, hot water, and Wi-Fi. Walking distance from the CBT Naryn permit office.

Day 5
Naryn to Kok-Kiya Valley via Koshoy-Korgon
Depart Naryn southwest toward At-Bashi. First stop: Koshoy-Korgon, a 9th-12th century Karakhanid fortress occupying 8 hectares with walls reaching 10 meters, directly on the former Silk Road alignment between the Fergana Valley and the Tarim Basin. Small museum on site. Allow 45-60 minutes. Continue through At-Bashi for final supplies, then southeast over Kyndy Pass at 3,337m into the Kok-Kiya Valley border zone. Arrive at the yurt camp by early evening. No electricity, no hot water, no signal. Two nights here as base for Kel-Suu. Approximately 180km, 4-5 hours including stops. Meals: B / L / D
Your Accommodation
Yurt Camp, Kok-Kiya Valley

Day 6
Kel-Suu: Horseback to the Lake and Full Gorge Expedition
Saddle up at 9am for the 8km ride south through the valley to Kel-Suu, a canyon lake formed by a 1980s earthquake at 3,514m, enclosed by limestone cliffs up to 300 meters high. The approach is narrow; the lake appears suddenly. A private boat takes the group on the full 2.5-hour gorge expedition: the canyon narrows, walls rise vertically on both sides, waterfalls emerge from the cliff faces. Walk the shoreline and enter the cave system before the return ride. Picnic lunch at the water's edge. Riding: 8km each way. Depart 9am, return to camp by 5-6pm. Meals: B / L / D

Day 7
Kok-Kiya Valley to Chatyr-Kul
Depart Kok-Kiya after breakfast and drive southwest through At-Bashi, then south on the Naryn-Torugart highway. The terrain opens progressively into one of the highest plateaus in Kyrgyzstan. Chatyr-Kul sits at 3,530m directly below the Chinese border range: 23 kilometers long, frozen most of the year, a Ramsar-designated wetland and one of Central Asia's most important migratory bird staging points. Arrive in the afternoon and settle into the CBT yurt camp on the south shore. No other tourists on this plateau tonight. Tomorrow the horses will be waiting. Approximately 150km, 4-5 hours. Meals: B / L / D
Your Accommodation
Chatyr-Kul CBT Yurt Camp

Day 8
Chatyr-Kul to Tash-Rabat: The Panda Pass Traverse
Mount up at the Chatyr-Kul lakeshore at first light. The route follows Silk Road caravan tracks south into the At-Bashi range, climbing 600 meters to Panda Pass at 4,104m. At the summit the Chinese ranges extend beyond the border. On the north side the Tash-Rabat valley opens below, ending at the dark stone form of the caravanserai. Descend through meadows of horses, yaks, and marmots. The 4x4 meets the group at the valley camp, repositioned by road while you crossed the pass. Walk to the caravanserai before dinner. Riding: 20-24km one way, 6-7 hours. Meals: B / L / D
Your Accommodation
Yurt Camp, Tash-Rabat
Traditional yurt camp 100 meters from the Tash-Rabat caravanserai entrance at 3,200m.

Day 9
Full Day at Tash-Rabat
A morning at Tash-Rabat with a guide: 31 dome-shaped rooms, underground passages, suspected prison cells, and secret exits built into a hillside at 3,200m with no courtyard. Was this a 15th-century Silk Road caravanserai or a 10th-century Nestorian monastery? Archaeologists disagree. Your guide walks through both arguments room by room. Afternoon is free: the valley is pastoral and day-trippers leave by 2pm. After yesterday's pass crossing the body will use the time well. Star conditions here after dark are exceptional. Meals: B / L / D

The final night is at Supara Chunkurchak, an ethno-resort in the Chunkurchak Gorge 40km south of Bishkek at 2,500m. After nine consecutive nights above 3,000 meters the descent is physical. Wood-fired restaurant, sauna, mountain views. Arrive mid-afternoon having earned it. Approximately 350km, 7 hours including stops. Meals: B / L / D

We recommend booking 6-12 months in advance, especially for remote destinations like Greenland or Madagascar. This allows time for permit processing, securing the best local guides, and ensuring accommodation availability in these pristine, limited-access locations.
Each adventure includes expert local guides, unique accommodations, all transportation within the destination, most meals featuring local cuisine, and exclusive access to experiences unavailable to mass tourism. International flights and personal travel insurance are typically separate.
We design adventures for various fitness levels and always discuss physical requirements during planning. Many of our destinations offer different activity intensities, and we can customize experiences to match your capabilities while still providing authentic wilderness encounters.
We partner exclusively with local operators who share our conservation values, ensure tourism revenue supports local communities, limit group sizes to minimize environmental impact, and contribute directly to conservation projects in each destination we visit.
We understand plans can change. Our cancellation policy varies by destination and timing, but we always work to minimize fees and maximize flexibility. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance and will provide guidance on the best policies for adventure travel.
While we specialize in our core destinations, we can create custom adventures to other remote, wild places that align with our mission of authentic, sustainable travel. Contact us to discuss your dream destination and we'll explore possibilities.
We focus exclusively on authentic, off-the-beaten-path destinations that most travelers never reach. Our deep partnerships with local communities, commitment to conservation, and rejection of mass tourism create truly transformative experiences that benefit both travelers and destinations.
Safety is our top priority. Our local partners are extensively vetted and trained in wilderness safety and emergency protocols. We provide comprehensive safety briefings, maintain communication equipment, and have established emergency evacuation procedures for all our remote destinations.
