Things to Do in Chile
Starting points for your perfect trip
Iconic Treks
Chile claims several of South America's greatest multi-day treks. The W Trek in Torres del Paine covers 70 to 80 kilometers over four to five days past granite towers, glaciers, and turquoise lakes. The O Circuit extends that to 130 kilometers over seven to nine days. Cerro Castillo in Aysen offers dramatic basalt spires with a fraction of the crowds, while the Dientes de Navarino on Isla Navarino is the southernmost trek on Earth, a five-day circuit through polar tundra with views to Cape Horn.
Route of Parks
The world's largest network of protected areas connects 17 national parks across 2,800 kilometers from Puerto Montt to Cape Horn. Created through the Tompkins Conservation legacy, this corridor protects temperate rainforest, glaciers, fjords, and steppe in what amounts to the most ambitious rewilding project on the planet. Multi-day lodge-to-lodge segments or full through-expeditions with conservation briefings at each park.
Futaleufú River Rafting
Consistently rated among the top three whitewater rivers on Earth, the Futaleufú runs turquoise through northern Patagonia with Class IV and V rapids framed by snow-capped peaks and ancient forest. Multi-day luxury basecamp trips combine rafting with horseback riding, fly fishing, and hiking. The valley's remote location keeps crowds thin and the water pristine.
Atacama Stargazing & Dark Sky Expeditions
Private astronomer-guided sessions under the world's clearest skies with professional telescopes and 90 to 98 percent clear night probability from April through October. Combine San Pedro de Atacama's otherworldly landscapes with the Elqui Valley's certified Dark Sky Sanctuary, the first in South America. Arrange advance visits to ALMA observatory at 5,000 meters for an unparalleled look at cutting-edge astronomical research.
Wine Country Immersion
Private winemaker-hosted dinners, blending sessions, and harvest participation at biodynamic estates across the Colchagua, Maipo, and Casablanca valleys. The restored 1913 Colchagua Wine Train, overnight stays at vineyard lodges like the Lapostolle Residence, and cycling through fog-draped vineyards where Chile's signature Carmenere grape was rediscovered in 1994 after being thought extinct.
Carretera Austral Overland Expedition
Ten to fourteen day 4WD journeys along Chile's greatest road trip, 1,240 kilometers from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins. Queulat's hanging glacier, the turquoise Marble Caves of General Carrera Lake, Class V whitewater on the Baker River, and Caleta Tortel's boardwalk village with no roads. Luxury fly-fishing lodges and remote estancias punctuate the route.
Fjord & Cape Horn Expedition
Three to five night expedition cruises navigating Chile's labyrinthine waterway system to Cape Horn at 55 degrees south. Zodiac landings at calving glaciers, Kawesqar cultural sites, and the legendary lighthouse where 10,000 sailors perished. Blue whale watching in the Gulf of Corcovado from January through April, one of the largest known aggregations in the Southern Hemisphere.
Patagonia Puma Tracking & Wildlife
Torres del Paine holds the world's densest wild puma population, roughly 200 in the greater park area. Dawn and dusk tracking expeditions with expert guides over four to six day itineraries yield remarkably high sighting rates, especially May through September when cats descend to lower valleys. Luxury lodge stays at Awasi, Tierra, or EcoCamp between excursions, with guanaco herds, condors, and foxes as constant companions.
Indigenous Cultural Encounters
Mapuche ruka visits in the Lake District for traditional cooking, weaving, and spiritual ceremonies passed down through generations. Rapa Nui guided archaeology with Ma'u Henua community members on Easter Island, the indigenous organization managing the national park since 2016. Atacameno heritage tours in San Pedro with Lickan Antay communities maintaining 11,000 years of desert knowledge.
