Things to Do in Lake District
Starting points for your perfect trip
Villarrica Volcano Summit
Climb one of the few volcanoes on Earth with a visible lava lake. The 5-hour ascent crosses glacial ice above Pucón to a crater that has erupted over 60 times since 1558. Sulfurous plumes part to reveal molten rock glowing below your feet, then you toboggan back down volcanic snow.
Huerquehue Araucaria Forest Trek
Hike among ancient araucaria trees in the Lake District, prehistoric conifers overlooking Lake Tinquilco with Villarrica Volcano beyond. Sacred to the Mapuche for their edible seeds, trails pass hidden lagoons and volcanic viewpoints.
Mapuche Ancestral Immersion
Visit a traditional ruka near Curarrehue where Mapuche elders share the knowledge of a people who resisted both the Inca and Spanish for over 350 years. Taste fire-roasted piñones, try muday (a fermented wheat drink), and learn about merquén, the smoked chili anchoring Mapuche cooking.
Ancient Alerce Forest Trek
Walk among ancient Fitzroya cypresses in Alerce Andino National Park—trees over 4,000 years old that grow just 1 cm every 15 years. Towering above Valdivian rainforest, they shelter pudú and kodkod, the Americas’ smallest deer and wildcat.
Termas Geométricas Volcanic Hot Springs
Soak in 20 geometric slate pools fed by over 60 thermal springs along a 450-meter volcanic ravine. Designed by architect Germán del Sol, red wooden walkways snake through native forest connecting pools that range from 35 to 45 degrees Celsius. Widely considered Chile’s finest hot springs.
Cruce Andino Lake Crossing
Follow one of South America’s legendary routes across the Andes by ferry and bus, linking three glacial lakes between Puerto Varas and Bariloche. The 12-hour journey begins on emerald Lake Todos los Santos beneath Osorno volcano, then crosses into Argentina via lakes Frías and Nahuel Huapi.

Stories from Lake District
Volcanoes, Lakes & Living Forests
Chile’s Lake District is a geological theater. More than 2,000 volcanoes line the Andean spine here, and the Lake District claims some of the most dramatic: Villarrica (2,860m), one of fewer than a dozen volcanoes on Earth with a persistently active lava lake; Osorno (2,652m), whose symmetrical cone draws comparisons to Mount Fuji; and Llaima, whose eruptions have sculpted entire national parks. Below these peaks, glaciers carved the lakes that give the region its name, filling valleys with water that shifts between emerald and sapphire depending on the light.
The true treasure lies in the forests. The Valdivian temperate rainforest is the second largest of its kind on Earth, a remnant of Gondwana with species more closely related to those in New Zealand than anywhere in the Americas. One in three species here is found nowhere else. The alerce tree can reach 50 meters and survive over 4,000 years. Higher up, araucaria forests date their lineage to the Mesozoic era. These are not forests you walk through casually.
