An overland expedition to Kaieteur Falls, the world’s highest single-drop waterfall, traveling by private 4×4, riverboat, and foot through Guyana’s remote interior. Five days of jungle trekking along the Potaro River gorge, crossing log bridges and camping beside waterfalls, culminating at the rim of the falls with two nights on the plateau. Route Overview 4 Days · Guyana
1
Georgetown to Amatuk Falls
Into the Interior
Depart Georgetown early morning by 4×4, heading south through the coastal plains to the mining town of Linden. Continue along the rugged Linden-Mahdia highway, passing through savanna and dense rainforest before reaching Mahdia. From here, transfer to a riverboat and travel upstream along the Potaro River, navigating rapids and taking in the jungle-lined gorge. Arrive at Camp Amatuk beside Amatuk Falls for your first night in hammocks.
2
Amatuk Falls to Tukiet
River & Rainforest
Leave Camp Amatuk on foot, trekking through dense jungle along the Potaro River gorge. The trail crosses creeks (swimming required at several points), traverses makeshift jungle bridges fashioned from fallen tree trunks, and includes a short boat ride through a set of rapids before arriving at Waratuk. From Waratuk, choose between a four-hour jungle hike or a one-hour boat ride to Tukiet, at the base of Kaieteur Falls. The enigmatic Ibini mountain range serves as your constant backdrop. Tukiet offers a comfortable guesthouse with refreshing swimming in the Potaro River and spectacular views of the gorge stretching toward the falls.
3
Tukiet to the Summit
The Ascent to Kaieteur
From Tukiet, begin the three-hour ascent to the top of Kaieteur Falls. The trail winds through changing vegetation zones, passing cool mountain streams before reaching the final stage known locally as 'Oh My God' mountain, a name you'll understand once you're on it. When you reach the summit, the full grandeur of the world's largest single-drop waterfall by volume unfolds before you. At dusk, thousands of White-chinned Swifts gather in the sky, then plunge en masse through the curtain of water to roost on the cliff face behind the falls, creating one of nature's most remarkable spectacles. Your second day at the summit is devoted to exploring Kaieteur Falls National Park at a relaxed pace. Visit Johnson's View for a frontal perspective of the falls, spot the Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock, and search for the endemic Golden Frog living inside giant tank bromeliads near the rim.
5
Kaieteur Falls to Georgetown
Morning at the Falls & Flight Home
Wake to early morning mist rising from Kaieteur Falls. After breakfast, visit Johnson's View for a spectacular frontal vista of the falls and a final chance to spot wildlife along the plateau. In the afternoon, board a light aircraft for the scenic charter flight from Kaieteur to Georgetown's Ogle Airport. The aerial departure provides one final, unforgettable perspective on the falls and the vast, unbroken rainforest canopy stretching to the horizon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your journey. Can't find what you're looking for? Get in touch and we'll help.

We recommend booking 6-12 months in advance, especially for remote destinations like Greenland or Madagascar. This allows time for permit processing, securing the best local guides, and ensuring accommodation availability in these pristine, limited-access locations.
Each adventure includes expert local guides, unique accommodations, all transportation within the destination, most meals featuring local cuisine, and exclusive access to experiences unavailable to mass tourism. International flights and personal travel insurance are typically separate.
We design adventures for various fitness levels and always discuss physical requirements during planning. Many of our destinations offer different activity intensities, and we can customize experiences to match your capabilities while still providing authentic wilderness encounters.
We partner exclusively with local operators who share our conservation values, ensure tourism revenue supports local communities, limit group sizes to minimize environmental impact, and contribute directly to conservation projects in each destination we visit.
We understand plans can change. Our cancellation policy varies by destination and timing, but we always work to minimize fees and maximize flexibility. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance and will provide guidance on the best policies for adventure travel.
While we specialize in our core destinations, we can create custom adventures to other remote, wild places that align with our mission of authentic, sustainable travel. Contact us to discuss your dream destination and we'll explore possibilities.
We focus exclusively on authentic, off-the-beaten-path destinations that most travelers never reach. Our deep partnerships with local communities, commitment to conservation, and rejection of mass tourism create truly transformative experiences that benefit both travelers and destinations.
Safety is our top priority. Our local partners are extensively vetted and trained in wilderness safety and emergency protocols. We provide comprehensive safety briefings, maintain communication equipment, and have established emergency evacuation procedures for all our remote destinations.
