Guyana
An overland journey to Kaieteur Falls, one of the most powerful single-drop waterfalls in the world, by 4x4, riverboat and on foot through Guyana's interior. The first day is a long drive south through Linden and the rainforest to Mahdia, then a boat up the Potaro River to a hammock camp at Amatuk Falls. From there you trek along the Potaro gorge, swimming creeks and crossing log bridges, to Tukeit at the foot of the falls, and climb to the top for two nights on the plateau. At dusk, thousands of white-chinned swifts dive through the curtain of water to roost behind it, one of the great wildlife sights in South America. A day on the plateau brings golden rocket frogs and cock-of-the-rock, and a light aircraft flight takes you back to Georgetown. A challenging trek, fully supported by guides and porters.
Kaieteur Falls Overland Trek
An early start from Georgetown by 4x4, heading south through the coastal plains to the mining town of Linden. From there the road turns rough, running through savanna and then dense rainforest on the long drive to Mahdia, a gold-mining town deep in the interior.
At Mahdia you switch to a riverboat and head up the Potaro River, through rapids and a jungle-lined gorge, to Camp Amatuk on a sandy island below Amatuk Falls. Dinner is cooked at camp, and the first night is spent in hammocks to the sound of the falls.
Meals L/D
A day on foot through the forest along the Potaro gorge. The trail crosses creeks, a few of them deep enough that you swim, and log bridges made from fallen trees, with a short boat ride through a set of rapids before Waratuk.
From Waratuk you choose between a four-hour forest hike or an hour by boat to Tukeit, at the foot of the climb to Kaieteur. The Ibini mountains are in view much of the way. At Tukeit there is a guesthouse, and the river below it is good for a swim.
Meals B/L/D
A three-hour climb from Tukeit to the top of Kaieteur. The trail climbs through changing forest and past cool streams to the last and steepest section, known locally as Oh My God mountain, a name that makes sense once you are on it.
At the top, the Potaro River drops 226 meters over the edge in a single fall. At dusk, thousands of white-chinned swifts circle above the gorge, then dive through the curtain of water to roost on the cliff behind it. Dinner and the night at the guesthouse on the plateau.

A full day in Kaieteur National Park at an easy pace. The trail along the rim leads to the park's viewpoints, from Johnson's View, which looks straight at the falls, to Rainbow View and Boy Scout View, each showing the falls and the gorge from a different angle.
Look for the tiny golden rocket frog, which lives its whole life inside the giant tank bromeliads near the edge, and for the bright orange Guianan cock-of-the-rock in the forest. In the evening, a second chance to watch the swifts come in, with the plateau quiet after the day visitors have gone.

Early morning on the rim, when mist rises out of the gorge and the plateau is quiet. After breakfast, there is time for a last walk to the edge before the day flights bring in visitors, and a final look for frogs in the bromeliads.
In the afternoon, a light aircraft flight takes you back to Ogle Airport in Georgetown. The plane usually swings past the falls after takeoff, and then it is unbroken rainforest almost all the way to the coast, a fitting last view of the country you crossed overland.

What the walking and nights are like.
It is a challenging trek. The trail to Tukeit is hot and humid, with creek crossings and log bridges, and the three-hour climb to the top of the falls is steep near the end. You should be a regular hiker and comfortable on rough, muddy ground.
Yes, a short way. A few creek crossings on Day 2 are deep enough that you swim, and your guides help at each one, but you need to be able to swim.
Only a day pack. Porters carry the camping gear and food, and you carry water, rain gear and what you need on the trail.
Better than most people expect. The first night at Camp Amatuk is in hammocks with mosquito nets under a shelter, all provided, and a light layer helps since nights by the river can be cool.
Simple. The guesthouses at Tukeit and on the plateau have basic rooms and shared facilities, and they are about location, not comfort.
When to go and how it works.
February to April and August to October, the drier months between Guyana's two rainy seasons. The falls run year-round, but trails are muddier and creeks higher in the wet months.
In Georgetown. Plan to arrive at least a day before, since the 4x4 leaves early on Day 1, and we can book your Georgetown hotel nights for you.
Yes, a strict one. The light aircraft has tight weight limits, so pack light and leave anything you won't need on the trek at your Georgetown hotel.
