Guyana Tour Overview
Where Authentic Ranch Life Meets World-Famous Wildlife Encounters
Seven days across two of the Rupununi’s most significant wildlife and conservation properties. The first three nights are at Wichabai Ranch, headquarters of the South Rupununi Conservation Society, where SRCS researchers have identified 26 individual giant anteaters in the surrounding savannah. You join their field teams before dawn for active tracking expeditions, walk jaguar camera trap trails, and spend your evenings on the Rupununi River with black caiman and the night sky above. The final three nights are at Karanambu Lodge, the McTurk family’s 115-square-mile private wilderness sanctuary, for dedicated giant otter expeditions at dawn, Victoria Amazonica water lily boat trips at sunset, and one of the most complete introductions to the Rupununi wetlands available anywhere.
Rupununi Savanna Safari
Fly from Georgetown to Lethem, then drive south into the Rupununi. Stop at Kumu Waterfalls for a swim in mountain-fed cascades and a farm-fresh buffet lunch. Arrive at Wichabai Ranch and settle into your elevated wooden cabin before heading into the hills for sundowners and your first views across the endless savannah.
Meals L / D
Morning river trip with breakfast on the water, followed by a bush walk to check jaguar camera traps. Afternoon with Wichabai's semi-wild capybaras, then join real vaqueros for a cattle roundup and lasso lesson. End the day on a night canoe: caimans, bats, and stars over the Rupununi.
Meals B / L / D
Visit a Wapishana family farm to harvest cassava and make traditional bread and tapioca, then share a meal prepared from the morning's work. Explore new hilltop viewpoints across the Rupununi before a farewell BBQ dinner under an open sky at Wichabai.
Meals B / L / D
Final morning at Wichabai, then drive north to Lethem for lunch before continuing to Karanambu Lodge. Settle into the legendary wildlife sanctuary before an evening boat trip through ponds of blooming Victoria Amazonica water lilies, Guyana's national flower, with rum punch as the sun sets.
Meals B / L / D
Pre-dawn start for giant anteater tracking with SRCS vaquero search teams. Return for a leisurely breakfast, then optional walks on Karanambu's trails. Afternoon river expedition through the Rupununi wetlands and lily ponds. Return after dark on a night safari: caimans, night birds, and river snakes.
Meals B / L / D
Two dedicated giant otter expeditions: one at dawn when otters are most active, one in the afternoon targeting monkeys and otters along Karanambu's waterways. Expert guides navigate based on the latest sightings. Final evening: a BBQ dinner under the giant mango tree.
Meals B / L / D
A final morning at your own pace: last otter search, birdwatching among 400+ species, or a quiet walk through the 115-square-mile reserve. Then depart from Karanambu's private airstrip, flying low over the Rupununi wilderness back to Georgetown.
