Namibia Tour Overview
An 11-day private guided safari built around light, from the dunes at Sossusvlei to the Skeleton Coast and Etosha end to end
Eleven days with your own guide and vehicle, timed around the best light in Namibia. Two nights inside the Sossusvlei gate for sunrise and sunset in the dunes, the coast at Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, Spitzkoppe and the Skeleton Coast, then two nights inside Etosha at Okaukuejo's floodlit waterhole and a slow crossing of the park to the east.
11-Day Namibia Photographic Private Guided Safari
Your guide meets you on arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, hands over your travel documents and takes you into Windhoek. If time allows, there is a short tour of the city before you settle in.
The rest of the day is yours. From tomorrow your guide drives, handles the logistics and knows where the light will be, so the only thing you need to think about is the camera. Dinner is at your own arrangement.
Meals B
Windhoek to Sossusvlei, 350 km, five to six hours, over the Spreetshoogte or Remhoogte Pass, where the central highlands drop away to the desert plains below.
Two nights at Dead Valley Lodge, inside the park gate, putting you at the dunes at first light and brings you back for the last of it, which visitors staying outside the gate cannot do.
Meals B / L / D
Out before dawn for sunrise in the dunes, then the highlights in the first light: Sossusvlei itself, Deadvlei with its nine-hundred-year-old camelthorn skeletons standing on cracked white clay, Dune 45, Big Daddy, Elim Dune and the Sesriem Canyon.
Back to the lodge for lunch through the flattest light of the day, then into the park again for sunset. The same dunes give two entirely different sets of images. A hot air balloon flight and a guided Sossusvlei excursion can both be added.
Meals B / L / D
Sossusvlei to Swakopmund, 350 km, five to six hours. North to Solitaire, then west across the Tropic of Capricorn, through the Gaub and Kuiseb canyons and over the Namib gravel plains to the Atlantic.
The shoreline is known as the Skeleton Coast for its barren reaches, its shipwrecks and the whale bones that once littered the beaches. Lunches and dinners are at your own arrangement, in cafes and restaurants overlooking the sea.
Meals B
A full day on the coast. The outstanding excursion is Sandwich Harbour, where the dunes run straight into the Atlantic and which is reachable only by 4x4 on the tide.
A dolphin and seal cruise on Walvis Bay, sea kayaking, dune quad biking and sandboarding are the other options. Lunches and dinners are at your own arrangement.
Meals B
Swakopmund to Ai-Aiba, 400 km, five to six hours. North along the coast via Henties Bay to the Cape Cross seal colony, stopping at the lichen fields and the shipwreck near Wlotzkasbaken, then inland to Spitzkoppe, the granite inselberg that rises out of flat desert.
Time to photograph the Rock Arch and the San paintings before continuing into the Erongo Mountains. Ai-Aiba sits among rock art of its own, with guided walks, nature drives to nearby sites and mountain biking on offer. Lunches are at your own arrangement.
Meals B / D
Ai-Aiba to Etosha, 325 km, four to five hours, via Usakos, Karibib, Omaruru and Outjo to Andersson Gate on the park's southern boundary. Park fees are included.
Two nights at Okaukuejo, inside the park. If the day allows, your guide takes you straight out on an afternoon game drive. Lunches and dinners are at your own arrangement.
Meals B
A full day in the park with your guide, on game drives timed around the light and the waterholes. Etosha holds 114 mammal species and 340 bird species around a salt pan visible from space.
Okaukuejo's floodlit waterhole is the other reason to stay inside the park. Rhino, elephant and lion come to drink after dark, and it is one of the few places in Africa where you can photograph them at night from your own camp.
Meals B
A full day's game drive from the southern side of Etosha to the eastern boundary, stopping at waterholes along the way. A packed lunch can be arranged at extra cost and eaten overlooking one of them.
The eastern side is flat endless plain and tree savannah, a different landscape and a different light. Tonight is at Onguma Bush Camp, on a private reserve on the park's eastern boundary.
Meals B / D
Etosha East to Otjiwa, 330 km, four to five hours, south via Otavi and Otjiwarongo to the oldest private game farm in Namibia.
Otjiwa carries around 25 game species including white rhino, sable and roan. Sundowner drives, game walks, horse riding, rhino tracking and night drives can be arranged at the lodge, or your guide will take you on a nature drive. Lunch is at your own arrangement.
Meals B / D
An early rise for the optional morning activity, then a full breakfast before leaving. Otjiwa to Windhoek is 225 km, three to four hours, and your guide takes you on to the airport.
Allow generously: the airport is a forty-five minute to one hour drive beyond the city and check-in closes two hours before departure.

Your own guide and vehicle from the airport to the airport.
A professional Namibian guide who drives, handles every booking on the road and runs the game drives. The guide and vehicle are yours alone for the whole trip, not shared with other travellers.
A Toyota 4x4 safari vehicle with large sliding windows and a pop-up roof, so everyone shoots from a window seat or standing through the roof. It seats seven, but we keep it to a maximum of five so every guest has a window. Groups of six travel in a slightly larger vehicle.
From two to six, all sharing the same guide and vehicle. The rate per person falls as the group grows.
Yes. Every activity your guide can run with the vehicle is included, which covers the game drives in Etosha. Lodge-run activities such as balloon flights, night drives and rhino tracking are optional extras.
Why this route and these nights, if the pictures are the point.
Because the best light comes before the gates open and after they close. Dead Valley Lodge sits inside the Sossusvlei gate and Okaukuejo sits inside Etosha, so you are in position at dawn and dusk when visitors staying outside are still driving in.
Its waterhole is floodlit all night, and rhino, elephant and lion come to drink after dark. On the Luxury level you stay in a Premier Waterhole Chalet that faces it.
A long lens for Etosha, a wide lens for the dunes, and a bean bag rather than a tripod for shooting from the vehicle. Dust is constant in the dry season, so bring cleaning kit and change lenses inside the vehicle.
No. The itinerary is timed around the light either way, and your guide knows where it falls. Experienced photographers get more from it, but everyone gets the same positions.
Two ways to travel the same route with the same guide.
Almost. Both levels share Sossusvlei, the coast, Etosha and the same guide and vehicle. On night six Standard stays among the rock art of the Erongo Mountains and Luxury at the foot of Spitzkoppe, and the last night is at Otjiwa or at Okonjima with the AfriCat Foundation.
Full board at Sossusvlei on both levels, breakfast at Swakopmund and Okaukuejo, and half board or fully inclusive elsewhere depending on the level. Each day lists what you get.
Most of the trip is included. This is what is left.
Yes, both, along with your guide and all of the guide's costs. There is no vehicle excess to worry about, because you are not driving.
Lunches and most dinners in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Okaukuejo, optional activities such as the balloon flight and Sandwich Harbour, drinks, and gratuities for your guide and lodge staff.
