Namibia 8 days Small group
Eight days in a guided 4x4 convoy from Swakopmund to the Angolan border
Namibia
Eight days driving your own 4x4 up the Skeleton Coast in a convoy behind an expert tour leader. The route runs north from Swakopmund through Skeleton Coast National Park, past the wreck of a 1942 rescue plane and the Dunedin Star, to the Kunene River mouth on the Angolan border, then east through the dunes into Kaokoland and down the Hoarusib canyon to Purros.
Six nights are wild camps and one is at the Purros Community Campsite. The team brings the guide vehicle, recovery gear, a medical kit, a satellite phone and the camp kitchen, and cooks breakfast and dinner. You bring a capable, well-equipped 4x4, your own or a hired one.
Skeleton Coast 4×4 Expedition: Shipwrecks to the Kunene
An early start from Swakopmund, which is why you arrive the night before. The convoy forms up, the radios are checked, and the road runs north up the coast into Skeleton Coast National Park. At the Uniab River mouth, fresh water seeps into reedy pools a short walk from the surf, and the birding is some of the best on the coast. Further north the convoy crosses the Hoanib. Terrace Bay is the last fuel for about 1,000 km, so every tank and jerrycan is filled there. The first wild camp is in the dunes north of Möwe Bay.
Meals B / D
The morning stop is the wreck of a Ventura bomber from 1942. It flew in to help the castaways of the Dunedin Star, landed on a salt pan and never took off again. Then inland along the Hoarusib River, a green ribbon through the desert where oryx and springbok graze and desert-adapted elephant, brown hyena and desert lion all live. The night is a wild camp on the Khumib River.
Meals B / D
Today crosses the most colorful country in the park, ridges of ochre, purple and green between pale sand. Sarusas Spring is a waterpoint in the middle of it. Close by is the old Sarusas mine, where quartz and amethyst still glitter on the ground. The night is a wild camp at Agate Mountain.
Meals B / D
Much of the day is driven on the beach itself. Angra Fria is a cold, empty bay. Further north lies the wreck of the Dunedin Star, which ran aground in 1942, and the shelter its survivors made on the shore. Then the Kunene River mouth, where Namibia meets Angola and the river meets the Atlantic: crocodiles lie on the sandbanks and turtles feed in the estuary. Camp is in the dunes at Bosluisbaai.
Meals B / D
A free day, with no packing up. Fish from the beach on a catch-and-release basis (a permit is required), walk the dunes, watch the shorebirds, or try some dune driving. The day ends with a sundowner on the sand.
Meals B / D
The convoy leaves the park eastward through the dunes into Kaokoland, the remote northwest corner of Namibia. Oryx are the animals you are most likely to see, standing on open sand with nothing else in view. The night is a wild camp near the Hartmann Valley.
Meals B / D
South to the Hoarusib River and its canyon, where desert-adapted elephant, lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena all live. The night is at the Purros Community Campsite on the river. If you would rather have a bed, a room at the Bush Lodge nearby is an optional upgrade at extra cost.
Meals B / D
The team escorts the convoy to Sesfontein to refuel and restock, and the trip ends there. From Sesfontein you drive on with your own plans.

What your vehicle and your own kit need for a week with no shops and no fuel.
Yes. Day 1 starts early from Swakopmund, so plan to spend the night before in town.
A 4x4 with low range and recovery points front and rear. Carry a tire pressure gauge, a pump and a tire repair kit. A second spare wheel is strongly advised. If you don't have your own vehicle, we quote a hired camping 4x4 separately.
There is no fuel between Terrace Bay and Palmwag, about 1,000 km, so your vehicle needs that range from its tanks and jerrycans. As a guide, that is about 220 liters of diesel or about 280 liters of petrol.
Bring 20 liters of water for the communal supply, plus about 40 liters of your own for washing, and two bags of firewood. Your tent must be waterproof, because the coastal fog soaks everything, and the nights are cold, so pack warm clothes.
Everything you bring in goes out with you. Carry your own garbage bags and keep your waste until Sesfontein.
Only with a fishing permit, and only catch and release. No fishing is allowed north of Bosluisbaai.
How the departures run and what the team brings.
Ten fixed departures in 2027: March 26 to April 2, April 28 to May 5, May 24 to 31, June 22 to 29, July 3 to 10, August 13 to 20, September 25 to October 2, October 13 to 20, November 6 to 13, and December 28 to January 4, 2028.
Price on request. Ask us for your dates and we will send it. Hiring a camping 4x4 is quoted separately.
You drive your own vehicle, in a line behind the tour leader and the guide vehicle, in touch by two-way radio the whole way. The guide vehicle carries the recovery gear, the medical kit and a satellite phone. Each evening the team sets up camp and cooks dinner, and breakfast the next morning.
