Namibia
A 16-day private guided loop from the Kalahari and the Fish River Canyon up the Skeleton Coast to Etosha, and back. Lodges every night, from a roadhouse near the canyon to a bush camp on Etosha's eastern boundary.
Namibia Tour Overview
A full loop of Namibia, from the Kalahari and the Fish River Canyon up the Skeleton Coast to Etosha and back, with your own guide and vehicle
Sixteen days and around 3,250 km with a guide and vehicle for your party alone, in a loop from Windhoek through the red dunes of the Kalahari, the Fish River Canyon, the abandoned diamond town at Kolmanskop, the oldest desert on earth at Sossusvlei, the Skeleton Coast, the rock art of Damaraland, and Etosha from south to east. Two nights each at Luderitz, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland and eastern Etosha, so you see them twice in different light. Your guide drives every kilometre, and fuel and park fees are included. Up to 6 guests to a vehicle.
16-Day Namibia Grand Tour Private Guided Safari
Your guide meets you on arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, hands over your travel documents and drives you into Windhoek. If time allows, there is a short tour of the city on the way in.
The rest of the day is yours. Windhoek sits in a long valley between the Auas Mountains and the Khomas Hochland, and an afternoon among its historical buildings, galleries and craft shops is an easy way to settle in. Dinner is at your own arrangement, and the city has several good restaurants.
Meals B
Windhoek to the Kalahari, 245 km, three to four hours. After breakfast there is time to pick up anything you need in town before your guide heads south into red sand country, where long parallel dunes run for kilometres and the grass between them turns gold in the late light.
The afternoon is at leisure. Game and nature drives and guided walks can be arranged at the lodge, and the sunset from a dune crest is the reason to spend a night here rather than pushing straight south. Lunch is at your own cost.
Meals B / D
Kalahari to Fish River Canyon, 440 km, seven to eight hours. South via Mariental and Keetmanshoop into the Karas region.
On the way there is a detour to the Quiver Tree Forest and Giant's Playground, where dolerite boulders sit stacked as though somebody arranged them and the tree aloes that give the forest its name grow between the rocks. The Fish River Canyon is the largest in Africa, 160 km long and up to 550 metres deep, and the view at sunset ends the day.
Meals B / D
Fish River Canyon to Luderitz, 385 km, five to six hours. A morning look at the canyon, then west through harsh country that opens into desert plain as you approach the coast.
The road runs via Aus, where a population of feral desert horses has survived in the Namib for roughly a century and can often be seen from the road. Luderitz is a German colonial town wedged between the desert and a cold Atlantic, and the wind rarely stops.
Meals B
A full day in Luderitz with your guide. The essential visit is Kolmanskop, the diamond town abandoned in the 1950s and now half buried, with sand drifted waist-deep through its ballrooms and hospital wards. It is the clearest demonstration in the country of how quickly the Namib takes ground back.
The peninsula has its own coastline of lagoons and headlands, and a catamaran runs out to Halifax Island and its African penguins as an optional extra. Lunch and dinner are at the restaurants in town, at your own cost.
Meals B
Luderitz to Sossusvlei, 505 km, seven to eight hours, and the longest distance of the trip. Back to Aus and north via Helmeringhausen through country that empties out as you go.
You are entering the oldest desert on earth. Star dunes with as many as five crests rise three hundred metres here and rank among the largest anywhere, and the valleys between them hold clay pans left when the Tsauchab River gave up trying to reach the sea more than sixty thousand years ago.
Meals B / D
An early breakfast and out to the Sesriem Gate for the full day in the dunes: Sossusvlei itself, Deadvlei with its nine-hundred-year-old camelthorn skeletons on cracked white clay, Dune 45, Big Daddy and Elim Dune. Sesriem Canyon, cut by the same river and only two metres wide in places, completes the day.
Return to the lodge for lunch through the heat of the middle of the day, or take a packed lunch out among the dunes, then back in the late afternoon. Lunch is at your own cost. A hot air balloon flight over the sand sea and nature drives on the reserve can both be arranged as extras.
Meals B / D
Sossusvlei to Swakopmund, 350 km, five to six hours. North to Solitaire, then west across the Tropic of Capricorn and through the Gaub and Kuiseb canyons onto the Namib gravel plains.
The route runs in via Walvis Bay, or on the recommended detour via Ganab to the Welwitschia Plains, where individual plants have been growing for well over a thousand years, and the Moon Landscape. Swakopmund is a genuine oddity: Bavarian spires among palm trees, a lighthouse from 1902, German cake shops, and the adventure capital of Namibia all at once. Two nights here.
Meals B
A full day set aside for the coast. Walvis Bay's lagoon, thirty minutes south, is a Ramsar wetland holding tens of thousands of flamingos along with pelicans and a Cape fur seal colony at Pelican Point.
The options are wide: a dolphin and seal cruise, Sandwich Harbour by 4x4 where the dunes run straight into the Atlantic, sea kayaking, dune quad biking and sandboarding.
Meals B
Swakopmund to Damaraland, 445 km, seven to eight hours. North along the Skeleton Coast via Henties Bay to the Cape Cross seal colony, one of the largest Cape fur seal breeding colonies in the world, with stops at the lichen fields and the shipwreck between Wlotzkasbaken and Henties Bay.
Then back to Henties Bay and inland across open plains to Uis, and north to Twyfelfontein. Damaraland is khaki plain and sheer rock, home to desert-adapted elephant and black rhino, and the conservancy system that protects them here is one of the genuine conservation successes in Africa. Lunch is at your own cost.
Meals B / D
A full day in Damaraland. Twyfelfontein holds more than two thousand rock engravings, the finest prehistoric rock art in southern Africa and Namibia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain are a few kilometres away, and the Damara Living Museum is worth an hour.
Your guide then takes the 4x4 west into the dry bed of the Huab River to look for desert-adapted elephant, along with oryx, springbok and ostrich. The elephant range widely and are never a guarantee, but this is one of the better places on earth to find them.
Meals B / D
Damaraland to Etosha, 325 km, four to five hours. East toward Khorixas with a stop at the Petrified Forest, where trees turned to stone two hundred and eighty million years ago lie where they fell, then along the tar to Outjo and north to the southern boundary of the park near Andersson's Gate.
You reach the lodge in time for lunch, then enter the park for an afternoon game drive. The first stop is Okaukuejo, where your guide settles the entry fees and picks up a waterhole map, the single most useful thing to carry in Etosha. The park holds 114 mammal species and 340 bird species, and the gate closes at sunset.
Meals B / D
A full day's game drive from the southern side of Etosha to the eastern boundary, taking it slowly and stopping at waterholes along the way. Lunch is at Halali, halfway between Okaukuejo and the eastern gate, or a picnic at a waterhole.
Etosha's 4,800 square kilometre salt pan concentrates the wildlife in the dry months, when the vegetation thins and the springs along the southern edge of the pan draw everything in. The eastern side is flat endless plain and tree savannah, reached through the Von Lindequist Gate, named for the governor who proclaimed the reserve in 1907. Two nights here.
Meals B / D
A full day for game viewing, either out all day or split into morning and afternoon drives with your guide and a rest at camp between.
The eastern side of the park is quieter than the south, with Fischer's Pan and the Namutoni waterholes within easy reach of the gate. Evenings at camp end at the fire, which is where the day's sightings get compared.
Meals B / D
Etosha East to Otjiwa, 330 km, four to five hours. South via Otavi and Otjiwarongo to Otjiwa, a private game farm carrying around twenty-five species including white rhino, sable and roan.
Sundowner drives, game walks, rhino tracking on foot and night drives can be booked at the lodge, and the Ombu village twenty kilometres away offers an afternoon with an Ovaherero guide over lunch.
Meals B / D
An early rise for an optional morning activity at Otjiwa, then a full breakfast before departure. Otjiwa to Windhoek is 225 km on tar, three to four hours.
Your guide drops you at Hosea Kutako International Airport in time for your flight. The airport is forty-five minutes to an hour beyond the city and check-in closes two hours before departure, so flights from mid afternoon onward work best.

Two ways to travel the same route with the same guide.
Almost exactly. Same sixteen days, same driving legs and the same nights in the same places, with one difference: the last night is at Otjiwa on Standard and at Okonjima on Luxury, both between Etosha and Windhoek. The comfort level otherwise sets where you sleep and what is included.
Standard is bed and breakfast in Windhoek, Luderitz and Swakopmund and half board everywhere else. Luxury is bed and breakfast in Windhoek, Luderitz and Swakopmund, half board at the canyon and in Damaraland, full board in the Kalahari, at Sossusvlei and at Ongava, and fully inclusive for the last three nights. Each day of the itinerary lists what you get.
Often, yes. It has to be quoted individually because availability differs by property, so ask us and we will put a price together.
What travelling with your own guide actually means.
Everything on the road. Your guide meets you at the airport, drives every leg, settles park entry, finds the waterholes and the elephant, and handles the practical side of each day so you can look out of the window. The guide and vehicle are for your party alone.
Up to six. The vehicle is a Toyota 4x4 with large sliding windows and a pop-up roof for game viewing. Groups of six travel in a slightly larger vehicle so that every guest keeps a window seat.
Around 3,250 km of road across sixteen days. The long legs are the Kalahari to the Fish River Canyon at 440 km, Luderitz to Sossusvlei at 505 km and Swakopmund to Damaraland at 445 km, each seven to eight hours with stops. Two days in Etosha are game driving rather than transit, and there are full days without long drives in Luderitz, at Sossusvlei, in Swakopmund and in Damaraland.
Most of the trip is included. This is what is left.
Yes, at both comfort levels, along with your guide and all vehicle costs.
Sandwich Harbour by 4x4 and the balloon flight at Sossusvlei are the two people most often add. The Halifax Island catamaran at Luderitz, the Swakopmund excursions and the activities at Otjiwa are the others. Lunch on most days and dinner in Windhoek, Luderitz and Swakopmund are also your own cost.
Solo departures are quoted individually because one person carries the whole cost of the guide and vehicle. Contact us and we will price it.
What the parks hold and what is realistic.
Etosha holds 114 mammal species and 340 bird species, and three nights across the south and east gives you a real chance at black rhino, elephant, lion and large herds of plains game. Nothing is guaranteed, and any operator who tells you otherwise is selling you something they cannot deliver.
Possibly. They range enormous distances across the Huab and Ugab river systems and are not confined to any reserve, so sightings are real but never certain. Your guide takes the 4x4 into the Huab riverbed specifically to look for them.
Yes, and in Etosha you must, because you are required to stay in the vehicle everywhere except at designated fenced points. The pop-up roof gives everyone a clear line over the grass, and a bean bag is more useful here than a tripod.
