Kaieteur Falls and the Plateau Endemics

An early flight from Ogle Airport carries you 50 minutes over unbroken rainforest to Kaieteur Falls. Overland to Iwokrama River Lodge

An early departure in a private 4x4 heading south on the Soesdyke-Linden highway. The 8-9 hour drive passes through coastal plain, bauxite country, then deep interior forest. The Kurupukari pontoon ferry crossing over the Essequibo is a highlight, with Large-billed Tern, Pied Lapwing, and Black Skimmer on the river. South of the Essequibo the road enters Iwokrama forest reserve. This 72km stretch is one of the best jaguar roads in Guyana: Black Curassow, Grey-winged Trumpeter, and Harpy Eagle are all recorded along this corridor. Day 5

Capuchinbird Lek, Cock-of-the-Rock, and Turtle Mountain

A pre-dawn walk to the Cock-of-the-Rock lek, where males display on known rocks at first light. The Capuchinbird lek trail follows: these large cotingas produce an extraordinary mechanical mooing call from display trees. Both are Guianan Shield endemics and Iwokrama is one of the best sites in the world for both. Transfer to Atta: Canopy Walkway Orientation

Transfer south along the Georgetown-Lethem road to Atta with roadside stops for mixed flocks. The road produces Grey-winged Trumpeter, Great Tinamou, and a road lek Cock-of-the-Rock site. This is the second Cock-of-the-Rock opportunity of the trip. The 154-metre canopy walkway at Atta, suspended 30 metres above the forest floor, is the primary platform for the canopy endemic suite. The afternoon orientation identifies active fruiting trees and raptor perches. Crimson Fruitcrow is reliable from the platforms. The Cotinga Suite from the Canopy Walkway

The pre-dawn walkway session is the centrepiece of the Atta days and the reason serious birders travel to Guyana. Purple-breasted Cotinga, Pompadour Cotinga, Dusky Purpletuft, and Spangled Cotinga all occur in the fruiting trees visible from the platforms. Cock-of-the-Rock Road Lek to Surama

Early departure for the road lek between Atta and Surama, the third Cock-of-the-Rock opportunity of the trip. Day 9

Burro Burro River Canoe and Drive to the Pakaraimas

Day 10

Sun Parakeet at Dawn, Then Southeast to Karanambu

A dawn start with the local Makushi parakeet rangers leading to the feeding sites identified the previous evening. Through the Rupununi to Red Siskin Territory

Day 13

Red Siskin at Sand Creek

An early dawn departure from Wichabai to the Sand Creek and Dadanawa Ranch area, a short drive compared to the same search from Lethem. The Red Siskin feeds on grass and weed seeds in dry scrub habitat. South Rupununi Conservation Society guides know the productive patches and the birds are most active in the first two hours after dawn. The South Rupununi population is one of the largest remaining wild Red Siskin populations anywhere. While searching, the habitat produces Pale-bellied Tyrant-Manakin, Flavescent Warbler, and Burnished-buff Tanager. Lunch at Dadanawa Ranch, a historic working cattle property.

Rio Branco Antbird, Hoary-throated Spinetail, Fly to Georgetown

Final Morning Birding and International Departure

Transfer to Cheddi Jagan International Airport for onward international flights.
